Shaunie Henderson launched Basketball Wives when her separation from Shaquille O’Neal was at its worst. Even without being involved in the show, the Basketball Wives have major Shaq disclosures.  An incident between the 4-time NBA champion and Shaunie’s friend would sour the friendship between castmates for good.

Now the one who was caught up in this mess is revealing what caused the fallout. This former NBA dancer was not only involved with Shaq and his ex. She’s the ex of another Orlando Magic legend, Dwight Howard.

Royce Reed is famous for a few things. She’s Dwight Howard’s ex and the mother of his child, and she’s also a former NBA cheerleader, and she was on Basketball Wives. Recently, Reed was on Carlos King’s podcast, where she made explosive revelation after revelation. When it wasn’t about Howard, she was talking about her time on Basketball Wives.

Before her exit, Reed apparently fell out of favor with Shaunie Henderson because of Shaquille O’Neal, and a decade later, she’s still feeling the sting of betrayal. The reason? Royce Reed told Carlos King that Shaq was sending her flirtatious messages while he was still married to Shaunie.

For a timeline, Basketball Wives premiered in 2010. Shaq would retire from the NBA in 2011, the same year he would finalize his divorce from Shaunie. At the time, Reed was a professional cheerleader within Orlando and Miami and apparently, a ball boy gave her number to Shaq. Reed didn’t allow it to escalate, telling King, “Nothing ever happened. He actually cursed me out cause I didn’t want to talk to him.”

She told King that she saw Shaunie as a “big sister” and didn’t want her to misunderstand. So she sent the entire thread of Shaq’s texts to her with proof that she didn’t lead him on. Though Reed did this to preserve their friendship, she ended up getting a rude shock at the next filming.

Evelyn Lozada asked Reed about the messages while the cameras were rolling. Only Shaunie knew about the texts through Reed, which made her feel betrayed that she used them on the show. After that, Reed knew she couldn’t trust her castmates, stating, “I couldn’t trust any of them. I was like ‘you have no friends.'”

Shaquille O’Neal responded to Reed’s expose with a comment on Instagram, “uh somebody needs money.” He hasn’t denied flirting with her. Shaunie is silent on the matter, similar to how she was silent in another confrontation.

Royce Reed said that she had sent Shaunie evidence of Shaq’s texts months ago.

In that time, she had trusted Shaunie enough to confide in her about other troubles. She was disappointed that, as the executive producer of the show, Shaunie stayed silent on the matter till they could use it as a “scene” with the other Basketball Wives.

This scene didn’t make the final cut, which is why it’s quite revelatory by Reed a decade later. But another castmate, Brittany Renner, would have a similar encounter regarding her platonic dinner with Shaq.

Here as well, Shaunie’s best friend, Evelyn led the charge while Shaunie sat back. However, that scene did air in this season. It would appear that the Basketball Wives, and not just Shaunie, have more than enough stories on Shaq. We’ll just have to wait and see how this pans out.

One take at a time

I was 7 when I saw 'Space Jam' but didn't know till the third rewatch the lead actor is actually a living basketball legend. It was while studying journalism that my friend would go on about the Warriors from Golden State. Keen on athletes' personas outside their arenas, it was Stephen Curry's confidence and philanthropy that drew me to follow the news on NBA pros and explore sports media.
