Everyone is unprepared for a job once or more in their life. But it’s wild to see established legends like Charles Barkley come unprepared for the job. That’s exactly what the audience got to witness from the former Philadelphia 76ers star during last Friday’s segment on March Madness. For those who missed, it started with Johnson asking Chuck his biggest takeaway from the first half?

Barkley was evidently panicking and struggling through the papers on his desk, trying to kill time and seemingly finding out what the score even was. While the social media had its responses, it’s not much of a big deal to Ernie. Especially because of Chuck’s similar antics in the past. Something that Ernie revealed on The Dan Patrick Show.

“We’re able to get away with it because we still had Kenny [Smith] and Clark [Kellogg] there who could cover that game…”, Johnson said. What he found funny was the fact that Charles Barkley looked down during the segment as if he was really going to say something about the game. “Like he had made a couple of notes and then realized he hadn’t watched any of it.”

Further revealing a similar previous instance, Johnson detailed that Charles Barkley has always taken great pride in his Oscar picks. So much so that he never misses one, as per his own claim. But when Ernie once got talking to Chuck about it, the reality turned out to be different.

“So we were talking about best picture… And he says, ‘I think the best picture is going to be 1918. I said, ‘Well, tell me about it.’ He said, ‘It’s your basic. You know what? I haven’t seen it.’ … So moments like that, you’re kind of. You’ve kind of come to expect,” Johnson recalled on The Dan Patrick Show.

What we had this time around was no different, with Barkley eventually ending with an awkward but hilarious moment in the best way possible by admitting he didn’t watch any of the game. “I was paying attention to the Bryant game. Please give that question to Clark or Kennet,” he said, sending the panel into even more of a hysteria. While this one passed in good humor, there have been previous instances of serious allegations against Chuck of not keeping up with the game.

The time when the ex-Celtics star accused Charles Barkley of giving opinions without watching NBA games

Back in April 2024, Chuck and Shaq made it clear they had no faith in the New York Knicks’ playoff hopes. But their skepticism didn’t sit well with Kendrick Perkins, who didn’t hold back in calling them out. His reasoning? He believed the two NBA legends-turned-analysts weren’t actually watching enough basketball to make an informed take.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Barkley's unpreparedness add humor, or is it a disservice to basketball fans?

Have an interesting take?

During his appearance on The Michael Kay Show, Perkins was asked what Barkley and Shaq saw that made them so quick to write off the Knicks. His response was blunt—he didn’t think they had the time to keep up with the games, leading to a complete misjudgment of the team’s performance.

“Obviously they don’t watch basketball,” Perkins said, doubling down on his stance. “I’m serious, they can’t watch basketball on a consistent basis. The only time they actually probably watch the Knicks are when they’re covering the Knicks on their game nights.”

For him, there was no way anyone watching New York regularly could dismiss what they were doing. “If you’re watching the New York Knicks, there’s no way in hell that you can just downplay the way they’ve been playing the game of basketball,” he added.

Even as the Knicks secured the No. 2 seed in the East, Barkley and Shaq stuck to their stance, earning Perkins’ sharp criticism.
