Being a superstar’s partner might make you deal with some tough situations. For Cookie Johnson, there was a time back in 1991 when she was torn between two choices, whether to go and support Magic Johnson in his championship run, or stay back and remain true to her professional commitment. Cookie mentioned in the book Believing in Magic: My Story of Love, Overcoming Adversity, and Keeping the Faith about the incident where she was fired from her job for that one decision. She recalled the 1991 championship run where Magic was going to face Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

Cookie wrote that she was anxious before the games and while things were transpiring behind the scenes, she had sleepless nights. In that crunch time, Cookie rang up some of her confidants and they all suggested that she get on the plane to Chicago. She then made the call to her boss, expressing what she had chosen for herself. She said, “I’m so sorry for doing this to you. I love you guys and you’ve been so good to me. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t absolutely have to. You know how up and down our relationship is.” Her message was received well at her place of work, however, choosing a relationship over her job meant that she would have to let go of it.

She wrote about her boss telling her over the phone, I understand. But you know you’re fired, right?. Cookie said that her boss was right about firing her from the job as she was prioritizing something else over it. Now that the decision was made, all she had to do was join Magic in Chicago as he was gearing up for his last NBA championship run.

But there were still several doubts, especially because of Magic as he didn’t help Cookie make her decision about whether to go to games or choose her career. To her surprise, when she stepped off that plane, she was about to see Magic’s grand gesture. She wrote, “When I stepped off that plane, Earvin was standing with his parents, waiting for me with open arms.” Despite all the turbulence they went through, it all worked out well for Magic and Cookie in the end.
