Magic Johnson is now a billionaire with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion. The legendary Laker faced a lot of hurdles in his life, notably in his health, but never let it affect his ‘go-getter’ attitude. He is one of the most successful athletes-turned-entrepreneurs today! In fact, Forbes declared him a certified billionaire in October 2023.

He now is part of the exclusive billionaire club along with the likes of sporting legends like Michael Jordan, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo among others. In a recent interview, a 4x All-Star analyses Magic Johnson’s unique trick as an NBA player, to enter the billionaire club.

In a recent Instagram post, Rachel Nichols interviews 4x All-Star Demarcus Cousins about Magic Johnson’s trick. Rachel Nichols reveals, “I want to shout to the boardroom putting together this great story about Magic Johnson.” She further adds, “He used to call season ticket holders to learn how they became rich…he would look court-side at Laker games during the Showtime era and he would get their phone numbers from the season ticket office.” Rachel Nichols further explains how Magic would call the season ticket holders and ask them their story of how they got rich. 

She then asks DeMarcus Cousins, “You played with the Warriors, where those Silicon Valley relationships have done very well for Andre Iguodala and some other guys on the team. Have you had any notable relationships with fans or season ticket holders, whether they’re financial or not?”

The 4x All-Star replies, “Absolutely. It’s the best way to move forward after basketball. Obviously, you can’t do this forever.” DeMarcus Cousins further explains, “I think Magic Johnson is brilliant for that and obviously, it just makes sense.” The former Warriors star then talks about the importance of the company one keeps regarding what he or she wants to become. He explains, “Picking the brains of these millionaires, and billionaires and figuring out the different businesses you can become a part of outside of basketball. So I think he did the right thing…you want to build those relationships with people sitting on the sideline.

Magic Johnson’s trick to develop his personal relationships with courtside fans is truly brilliant. It is definitely one of the perks that Magic could take advantage of when he started his entrepreneurial journey.

After abruptly retiring from the NBA in November 1991, many believed that Magic Johnson’s life’s journey had come to a screeching halt suddenly. However, not only did Magic conquer his personal health issues but he conquered his life after the NBA as well. Today, the 64-year-old Magic Johnson’s estimated net worth stands at a staggering $1.2 billion. The Lakers legend is a fierce entrepreneur, who has an interest in almost every business. The Magic Johnson Enterprises includes movie theaters, fast-food franchises, real estate, and healthcare. However, one of the most significant businesses Johnson has a controlling stake in is an Iowa-based life insurance provider located in Des Moines called “EquiTrust”.

Apart from the businesses mentioned above, Magic also has a keen interest in different sports teams and has a stake in MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers. He also owns stakes in the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, MLS’ Los Angeles FC, and the NFL’s Washington Commanders.
