Gayle King Says Cancellation Rumors Are “Wrong”, Hints at Next Chapter With CNN Co-Host Charles Barkley

Never say never, is what Charles Barkley and his favorite co-host would say. Contrary to all the reports calling it a day on King Charles, the show’s hosts dropped a major bombshell, indicating it’s not the end. Gayle King, disregarding that Chuck is on Instagram now, posted a message a week after the season finale. Apart from calling them a great team and refusing to pick between Chuck and her other co-host at CBS, King even hinted this is not the end of King Charles.
“BIG SIGH! Having #KingCharlesCNN withdrawals today!” she wrote on Instagram. “When we wrapped up our show last Wednesday, @charleswbarkley and I had this moment. The plan was always for it to be a limited run.” This was always the deal, as Chuck’s going to be occupied with the NBA playoffs at TNT now. But the possibility of them returning to CNN is not as slim as we thought.
Addressing several reports claiming that CNN has axed any hopes of renewing King Charles, King wrote, “Reports of our death aka cancellation have been greatly exaggerated aka wrong ! We’re all trying to decide next steps…” In the same Reel, they said their partnership is in a “to be continued” status.

She further wrote, “In the meantime boy was that fun! I just adore this man and now he’s up for the Outstanding Sports Personality Emmy against my @cbsmornings co-anchor @nateburleson and I refuse to choose bc they are both great at what they do! Special shout out to the King Charles team, there would be no us without you!!” She also shared the heartwarming pictures of the King Charles crew with hopes of working with them again.

King Charles was expected to be a blockbuster boost to CNN’s falling ratings. However, the star power of Chuck and Gayle didn’t draw viewers and ratings continued to decline till the end. No matter how much Barkley downplayed the significance of numbers, reports emerged that CNN didn’t see any benefits in renewing the show for another season.

The creator of the show, Chris Licht, was fired before King Charles premiered in November. But contrary to rumors of the show getting axed, it appears that King and Barkley are already negotiating the next season.
Charles Barkley debunks more rumors
There was also speculation that the show was canceled early due to poor ratings. However, King Charles was always going to end before the playoffs. Apart from Chuck’s commitment as a TNT studio analyst, King also helms the morning show at CBS. Both had no intention to take on another TV gig but came on to CNN for the opportunity to work together.

Rumors of friction between the co-hosts were hard to ignore too. Chuck joked about it several times by reminding King they’re not supposed to be friends. But in this Reel, both reiterated they’d miss working for each other. Barkley even coerced her into picking between him and her CBS co-anchor, Nate Burleson. And he won. This is why Chuck adores Gayle over his frenemies at TNT.

It remains to be seen if Chuck and Gayle will make another season of King Charles happen. If it does, it will only be after the 2023-24 NBA season concludes.
