Two things Gilbert Arenas could use right now – The DeLorean time machine or the MIB neuralyzer. Two months ago, he made some comments about Stephen Curry that did not sit well with fans in the slightest. Then 3x champ Udonis Haslem grilled him about it. Arenas’ response to it now is raising a few eyebrows. Either he forgot what he said, and doubled down on it, or he’s altering his definition of ‘generational talent.’ Now he’s allowed to change his opinions. Yet, Agent Zero is not backtracking, he’s pretending he never infuriated The Chef’s fans.

During Arenas’ recent appearance on The OG’s, Haslem asked, “Explain the comment one time, you said Steph wasn’t a generational talent.” Now UD finds it hilarious. More so when Arenas said, “They don’t know how to use the word right.”

Generational talent… it’s an amateur status. You are a generational talent means you have potential still… Wemby [Victor Wembanyama] is a generational talent. How can him and Steph [Curry] be on the same platform? So one is not used right. So once you became a player, you became a generational player… So [Curry] has already manifested, [so he’s a generational player],” is what Arenas says now.

Apart from expanding the concept of ‘generational player,’ he’s not entirely wrong that comparing 4x champion Curry and Wemby is not fair. Even UD says that the 20-year-old ROTY still has to prove he’s a generational talent. But it gets weirder from there.

It’s like my girlfriend, right? This is my girl. Once I marry her, I can’t call her my girlfriend no more. That’s disrespectful.” Okay…? That somehow makes the newly-engaged Gil’s point to say, “So I wasn’t the disrespectful one.”

In an isolated context, Agent Zero makes sense. Curry and Wemby are two different players at two different stages of their careers. But he never called Curry a generational player back then, or girlfriend or wife, for that matter. And what got on fans’ nerves even more, was that Arenas didn’t think Curry belonged in conversation with other generational talents/players.

What Gilbert Arenas had said

On this week’s Gil’s Arena, its namesake said that Wemby needs to narrow down what he’s good at like Steph Curry’s 3-point shooting to live up to his potential. The Olympics seems to have changed his stance but back in June, he said, “Steph is not a generational talent. Wemby is a generational person.

How he separated the two was completely different then. “Generational means you can’t mimic it. Can you mimic Magic Johnson, 6’9 point guard with the vision? No. You can’t mimic Shaquille O’Neal’s body. You can’t mimic f**king LeBron James. You can’t mimic Wemby… Those are generational. It only comes once every [few decades]. There are only five or six.

He said players like Nikola Jokic and Steph Curry are ‘just great basketball players’ but not a once-in-20-year phenomenon. Along with fans, Stephen A. Smith was the loudest slamming Gilbert Arenas. The 3x All-Star is entitled to his opinion. But if he’s smart, he’d not add a ‘just’ before ‘girlfriend’ or ‘wife.’
