Gilbert Arena, the former NBA All-Star point guard for the Washington Wizards, discussed the league’s trading culture on his podcast, Gil’s Arena. His opinion being that the system is dysfunctional, Arena’s comments come at a moment when the NBA is under increased scrutiny for how it treats its players. His remarks are poised to enrage NBA fans all over the world.

A player’s ego can change the dynamic of a team’s locker room. Egos are a major issue in the NBA because so many excellent players compete for personal glory and not just for the team’s success. The former point guard discusses on his podcast how every minor problem or conflict makes them want to be moved or switch teams these days.

With the emergence of player power and shorter contracts, the NBA free agent season appears to be getting wilder by the summer. Most recently, Kevin Durant requested a trade to the Brooklyn Nets. Money might be an issue for all the free agents who will presumably sign their final max contracts in their NBA careers.

The retired point guard Gilbert Arenas believes organizations are not authorized to pay players more than the official worth of a contract, but fringe perks remain a gray area.

Gilbert Arenas provided a setting for what happens in the locker room

“When you’re talking about the free agencies, there is $100 million here and $75 million dollars there, them cookies says f**k your $25 million, I’m going over here. People don’t realize that like most of these people that’s leaving it had to do with something that they feel like you don’t treat me right. My parking spot, my locker, you didn’t move my locker. I got this locker and an extra one; you don’t put somebody here. Damn, I don’t have two lockers.”

Gilbert asserts that if a team does not meet its players’ off-court needs, they will leave.

Gilbert Arenas said that he flipped a coin to pick between the Wizards, the Warriors, and the Clippers. Despite the fact that the Clippers won the coin toss, Arenas chose the Wizards. The Washington Wizards had offered him a six-year, $60 million contract.

The Wizards, particularly the Washington owner, looked after him. The owner stated he loved Gilbert and would spend money to get him there, convince people why he was purchased, and why he was critical to the team’s glory days. The Wizards won the race against the Warriors to keep Gilbert.
