Charles shares a story on how he got confused between Phil Mickelson, the golfer, and Phil, the bartender. A miscommunication led to Barkley confusing the 53 YO Hall of Famer golfer to be a bartender.

Barkley and Mickelson’s friendship

Phil Mickelson shared a video on his Instagram with Charles Barkley. The video revolves around on the behind the scenes on how Charles met Phil. Charles and Phil’s then girlfriend, Amy, were close friends.

Amy was a cheerleader for the Phoenix Suns and wanted Charles and her boyfriend Phil to play golf together.

In the video, we can see Charles saying, “Amy was the greatest lady. I got to know her really well. And when I got traded to Phoenix, things were really really hectic, so I had a tight schedule. She says to me, ‘Hey, will you play golf with my boyfriend Phil?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah, okay.'”

He further adds, “Like a month later she says, ‘Are you gonna play golf with my boyfriend Phil?’ ” To this, Barkley responds, “Yeah, I’ll play golf with your boyfriend Phil.”

“Three months in, she goes, ‘Are you ever going to play golf with my boyfriend Phil?’ And I’m like, ‘Okay Amy, what’s the deal? What’s his name?’ And she’s like, ‘Phil Mickelson.'”

Barkley mistook Amy’s boyfriend for a bartender named Phil, since he was unaware that she was dating Phil Mickelson.

However, the story had a happy ending with Barkley and Mickelson playing golf together. They even teamed up for The Match 3 following all that hilarious ambiguity.

Barkley goes, “I said, You’re going out with Phil Mickelson? Amy, in the future, you start out with my boyfriend Phil Mickelson. I thought you were going out with Phil, the bartender. I would have canceled everything to go play golf with the great Phil Mickelson.”
