A typical sunny Tacoma morning found NBA veteran Isaiah Thomas at the gym, focused on his usual workout. A day that was supposed to be about hard work and progress quickly turned into something completely unexpected. Nobody could have predicted what would happen next just outside the gym doors as the sirens drew closer. Let’s just say the grind doesn’t always go as planned.

Isaiah, who has been in his hometown training, was at the gym when a very real and dangerous situation unfolded. In a video posted to his Instagram story he captured a moment that had nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with chaos. At least 6 to 7 Tacoma Police Department cars flooded the area as officers armed were and running the street. The block was shut down as the police continued their investigation. From his tone, Isaiah seemed shocked, just like anyone else would be.

My car right there… come on man” he said as the police shut down the street with sirens blaring . The caption on his video “Just at the gym tryna get some work in smh.” Whether it was a car chase or a possible shooting we may never know. What we do know is that Isaiah was caught right in the middle of it while simply trying to do what he does every day…put in work and stay ready.

This wasn’t just a bad moment—it was a reminder of how unpredictable life can be even when you are focused on all the right things. Isaiah wasn’t out late or caught somewhere reckless he was doing what he’s always done “chasing greatness one rep at a time.” He’s back in Tacoma not just to stay in shape but to build something special for the community. And moments like these, though unsettling, don’t seem to shake his purpose.

Isaiah Thomas Still Pushing for NBA Comeback

Even at 35, Isaiah Thomas isn’t done chasing his dream. “My goal was always to play 14 years,” he said. “I’ve played 13. I still feel really good health-wise.” He’s confident his body can still compete at the highest level.

Isaiah knows the window to return could come in December or January. “That’s when teams look for experience,” he said. “I’ve played in 10 different cities, I know what it takes.” Most recently, he appeared in six games for the Phoenix Suns during the 2023-24 season, showing he still has what it takes to contribute.

But in the meantime, he’s pouring into the next generation through his Slow Grind Elite AAU program. “It’s my name on the program,” he said. “I feel an obligation to help them develop in the best way they can.” He’s in the gym every day, both training and mentoring kids from third to eighth grade. “You’ve gotta let them see it’s possible,” he said.

And the message hits home. “He is the example of how hard work pays off,” said Riley Martinez, one of the eighth-graders on the team. Thomas added, “At 5-9, I’ve been able to live out my dream.” He’s making sure those kids know they can too. And as for that final NBA run? “I’m going to do it in the right way,” he said.
