Matt Barnes is a retired GSW star, who was known for his clutch shooting. He helped the Golden State Warriors win the NBA championship in 2017 in his last season as an NBA professional. He was also known for his ‘hot-headed’ nature which he channeled into his in-game performance.

In a recent podcast interview, Matt Barnes recalled one incident when he did not hold himself back before exacting revenge on an NBA champion in the most savage fashion.

Matt Barnes said, “The first shot I hit, I didn’t even say nothing and he (Mo Cheeks) says “Oh that sh*t was lucky.” Next shot I hit, “Oh that sh*t was lucky too.” So, I end up going like 6 of 7 from the three-point line and 9 of 11 from the field.

The former GSW veteran further elaborated, “And every time I made a basket man…”suck my d***!”… like I went off on him. So much so that, the whole bench, the trainers (GSW)… these dudes were dying laughing.

Matt Barnes then clarified that he knows he shouldn’t disrespect coaches and even the ex-coaches (as Matt Barnes was a former 76ers player). However, Barnes really disliked Maurice Cheeks as a coach, who apparently gave the NBA veteran a ‘tough time’ during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Matt Barnes once threatened to “slap” an NBA Champion

In another podcast episode of “The Vertical Podcast with JJ Redick”, Matt Barnes told the story of how he almost crossed the line once with Maurice Cheeks, during his time with the 76ers.

Matt Barnes claimed, “He was just a d***, man. I don’t know any other word to explain it, he just wasn’t cool.” Barnes further explained, “I really didn’t like him and I would still to this day slap him in his face if he said anything to me type shit. I just don’t like him.”

I was shooting after practice one day, it was just me and the shooting coach in the gym, no one else in there. He (Mo) walks by and says, ‘What are you doing? You’re not going to be able to shoot here.'”

Matt Barnes then stated that a week or two after that incident, Mo Cheeks had said something else to him, and that was when he completely lost it. Matt Barnes explained, “I went after him and Chris Webber grabbed me and it was what it was.”

This is not the first time, however, that the retired NBA veteran almost hit an NBA player/coach. He once almost punched the Laker royalty, Kobe Bryant, too.
