Shaquille O’Neal proudly shares cultural significance, not worrying about the $15 million contract
A few days ago, the 4x NBA champion came dressed in bold black and gold of Alabama State University and flashing a “Que Dawg” salute. The reason? He hinted that he would leave the studio in two years after he becomes a college professor, after concluding his studies at Alabama State University. After Ernie Johnson asked the Big Aristotle why he was wearing the ASU gear, he replied, “From now, I would like to be addressed as Professor O’Neal, because when I graduate in two years, I will leave you and become a college professor on mentorship and business administration. I love you.”
When his TNT deal was up this July, he negotiated a new multi-year extension worth $15 million annually—up from $10 million. Thus, Shaq’s decision to consider leaving TNT for an HBCU sends a powerful message. After all, the 2022 Forbes reports state, some universities/colleges were underfunded by more than $12 billion over the last 30 years compared with non-HBCUs. Thus leading to staff cuts, fewer students, and the elimination of certain programs.
