And Shaquille O’Neal too has poured heart and sweat into his dreams to become what he is today. However, this is not the only thing that helped him. As he credits, his parents Lucille O’Neal, and stepdad Phillip Harrison also contributed their bit to his success story. “Lucille O’Neal is my best friend. My mom has always, always been there for me,” he wrote in Shaq Uncut.

His mom had his back until he met the love of her life and his stepdad Phillip. Since then, Phillip took on the responsibility of Shaq and molded his life, looking at him as his “flesh and blood from the beginning.” Eventually, Shaq’s disciplined childhood taught him life lessons that strengthened his worth from nothing to $500 million.

Whenever Shaq gets a chance, he likes to speak about his childhood and the support his parents offered him. In a recent interview session with JJ Redick’s team, he found the situation apt and offered insights about his successful life. The glimpse of the interview was then uploaded to the official YouTube channel of JJ Redick with the caption, “Shaq on His Place in the GOAT Debate and His Mutual Respect With Kobe.”

Even though Shaq speaking about his childhood is not something new, the detailed look at how his father’s loan made him the most entertaining player in the history of the NBA certainly is.

From humble beginnings to NBA stardom

As the video aired, it garnered the attention of millions as people got inspired by the life stories Shaq shared in the interview. “No one picked me out when I got to the NBA. There’s a whole bunch of people that, you’re not going to do this, you’re playing on a small market. I’ve always had that, but on the entertainment side,” said Shaq, giving some context.

He added, “I always tell the story. My father’s been golfing a long time, but he’s molded me into the guy that I am…he calls his friend Mingo, borrows some money, and wants me to see John Cronkite play.” At this time, Shaq was struggling and “ain’t got no offers”. However, he still has the hope to watch the game.

“So we go to the game, it’s a f*****g terrible game. He’s f*****g pissed because now he’s got to pay the money back,” said Shaq. And this acted as a steppingstone for Shaq as it fueled his dreams of achieving higher. As it is said, “All’s well that ends well,” Shaq’s hard work finally paid off. Inspired by Shaq?
