Now that the pandemic is over, Yao Ming wants his dream to come true. Chinese basketball has been going through a rough phase, and Yao Ming is not happy about the results being produced by the team. He knows Chinese players can evolve a lot if they get the chance to learn and compete against new talents from foreign leagues. So he is pushing for more opportunities for his players to go to other countries, especially the U.S. As Ming was in New York, he attended the team’s season opener.

Yao Ming also said that he has high hopes for many of his players. Ming said, “I’m sure we have a lot of talent, but discovery is an easy part. Development is a hard one.”

He wants his players to develop and reach their true potential. With China not focusing on bringing in foreign coaches or sending their players out to play against foreign competition, the players cannot learn new techniques or develop their existing skills.

Ming recently expressed his displeasure with how the Chinese league is operating. This was following the team’s disappointing result in the Asian Games. Yao Ming wants high school players to be able to get scholarships in the U.S. and to also face foreign competition. He is focused on the goals that he has in mind and is putting in the work to make them come to fruition.

Yao Ming is not happy with the current situation

Ming knows exactly how different the rest of the world is when compared to China in basketball. He has played with the Houston Rockets, and has gone up against Shaquille O’Neal during his time in the NBA. Ming wants to bring a lot of changes to the Chinese team and coaching. He expressed his desire for a smooth foreign exchange after their bronze finish at the Asian Games.

He knows that the current system in China is not suitable for basketball to prevail. So he wants to bring in a lot of change. He wants both the coaches and players to go to other countries and learn from them. The pandemic has certainly slowed down this process, but now that the world is back to normal, Yao Ming is hoping for his dreams to come true soon.

One take at a time

I did not follow the traditional route to become a journalist, but my love for basketball and writing has brought me here. Seeing LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers make the iconic comeback from a 1-3 deficit in 2016 changed everything for a young engineering aspirant within me. Rather than simply looking at the game, I love to analyze how each player contributes to a team using BPM (Box Plus Minus) and other advanced metrics.
