How Was Steph Curry as a Child? NBA Veteran Who Was His Babysitter Reveals

It’s often said that legends begin to show sparks of greatness and brilliance early in their lives. How was the Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry as a kid? His father Dell Curry’s former teammate, who has seen the Chef grow up, recently opened up about his emotions witnessing the little kid grow up to be one of the biggest stars in the NBA.

Rex Chapman was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 1988. He spent only four years with the franchise but formed a lifelong bond with Steph’s parents Dell and Sonia Curry. Not just teammates but the two were also neighbors and the Curry’s would often have Chapman as the babysitter for their baby. It was during this time that he was able to watch Steph closely.

“He was the best baby, the best little kid, the best like – all the way from born to the time he left and went to Davidson – the best kid in the world. And if there was any of the kids that we all grew up around that would have gone on to do this, Stephen is the one that deserves it,” Chapman proudly said in his recent interview with DJ Vlad.

Throughout the conversation, he spoke highly of Curry’s basketball skills. Chapman stated how the 4x NBA champion deserves the best in the world. He also spoke about one of their car rides to a ball game when little Curry also accompanied them.

Chapman always mentioned how he used to spend a lot of time with Curry’s father and former teammate Muggsy Bogues. Furthermore, the retired NBA player recounted that it was usually Dell Curry who drove the car. While Bogues sat in the front seat, rookie Chapman was joined by the little Curry in the backseat. He also mentioned the incident in his book, ‘It’s Hard for Me to Live with Me.’

During the DJ VLAD interview, Rex Chapman shared that while, during that moment he thought they were better than everyone, it was the baby Steph sitting quietly in the backseat who was better than them and everyone else. Chapman said, “We’re probably listening to sports radio, Mugsy was a lottery pick, I was a lottery pick, Dell’s a first-round pick.” He added, “The idea that the baby sitting next to us would be the best player, maybe in the world, ever, or the greatest shooter ever or even an NBA player at all? It was not even something that you would think about.”
