“I was so disappointed”: Having missed the billion dollar train, 7x NBA champion recalls being upset over Michael Jordan for a peculiar reason

Widely regarded as one of the luckiest NBA players of all time, Robert Horry is a seven-time NBA champion. Known for his clutch shooting performances in the playoffs, the former NBA player’s 16 year NBA career has definitely been an interesting one. Drafted by the Houston Rockets as the 11th overall pick in round 1 of the 1992 NBA draft, ‘Big Shot Rob’ helped the Rockets win the NBA championship in 1994 and 1995.

Horry holds a special record in the NBA to have never lost in the NBA finals: Houston Rockets (1994 and 1995), Los Angeles Lakers(2000,2001,2002) and the San Antonio Spurs (2005,2007). On the “Big Shot Bob” podcast, the seven-time NBA champion confesses that despite having such an illustrious career, he feels disappointed in having missed the billion dollar train.

The Jordan shoe deal Robert Horry never got

On the podcast, Horry talks about the Nike shoes he wore when he got drafted into the league. Upon being asked on whether it was a specific player brand like the Jordans or just Nike, Horry explained, “Back then, you’d be called dead if you was wearing another player’s shoes who was still active. Back then, my favourite shoes, Jordans? Hell nah, my favourite were the Air Pounds.“.

In the podcast, Horry recalls being upset with Jordan, “When Jordan was leaving the league, he had a lot of guys in his shoe brand and he never…I’m like dude…I was a dunker at that time too right. I’m like..there are dudes that you paying to wear your shoe but they ain’t won sh*t? They ain’t better than me. Why can’t I get a Jordan shoe deal man? Let me get some of that. I was so disappointed.“.

He further explains, “Because the Jordan brand guys, they still treat them good to this day and send them gear! I can call Nike up right now and all I will get is a hello and then I get hung up on.“.

Air-Jordans: A multi-billion dollar brand

After the first ever Air-Jordans worn by Michael Jordan in 1984, the Air-Jordans and all Jordan related products have expanded Nike’s domain and continues to define the sneaker culture till this day. Over the years, many NBA players have been taken under the wing of the Jordan brand and have instantly been made multi-millionaires.

Several professional athletes in today’s NBA have signed a shoe deal with Jordan-Nike. Some of those names are Luka Doncic, Zion Williamson, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and Jayson Tatum.

Jordan Brand revenue has been constantly increasing through the years and has hit $4.8 Billion in the 2021 season, a 31% increase from the previous year. Even till this day, MJ’s annual take is an estimated $130 million, four times more than that of James, the No. 2 earner, with $32 million who has his own brand deal with Nike called “Nike Lebron”.
