Charles Barkley is back to share his honest take on college basketball and he did not hold back this time as well. The Philadelphia 76ers legend has not been a great fan of NCAA lately and he has reasons for it. We are not speaking about the talent, but the changes that have been made in the tournament. NIL deals, transfers, contracts, etc. have been controversial additions over the years. The last time, Barkley was pissed about the government intervention in college basketball. This time, he is just upset about how the sports world is changing for money.

Barkley shared in a YouTube interview, “I just hate what we are going with the college athletics cause the way it is going now, especially with all the money and everything, I think in the next three years we’re going to have about 10-15 schools. And I don’t blame the kids cause listen, if they had to offer me millions of dollars I’d be going to a certain school too…It’s going to become a bid war and I’m just concerned where the sports going.”

NCAA’s transfer guidelines have been pretty lenient, and it has allowed money to play a major part. Since 2018, an athlete can apply for a transfer on an online portal and he/she can make his way into a big school just like that. The fact that the schools are ready to use money and hefty contracts to bring high-profile athletes to make a stacked team concerns Barkley. The NCAA transfer portal is not favorable for developing sports but for business. There are more concerning aspects, but money should not be the picture here, hinted Barkley.

Charles Barkley has advocated against the NCAA on various grounds

This time, he criticized the transfer portal. 8 months back he slammed NCAA president Charlie Baker for bringing government into college sports. Baker was previously the governor of Massachusetts and with his background in politics, he wanted to talk with a few folks in Washington to get help for consumer protection in NIL deals. Barkley believes that getting help from the government is a sign of weakness for the NCAA.

Barkley said, “Did he say we’re going to ask the politicians to help us? See, that pisses me off already. Our politicians are awful people…Democrats and Republicans- they’re all crooks. The 1993 MVP’s idea is to create an own committee through which the NCAA can tackle their problems. Several other college coaches and pro sports veterans have agreed to Barkley, but nothing has changed so far.
