The NBA referees have been under constant spotlight for their in-game calls, which according to many people, have gotten glaringly worse over the seasons.

The Denver Nuggets faced off against the Detroit Pistons in a recent NBA game where Nikola Jokic got ejected from the game for complaining about a fault that was not given in his favor. In a recent podcast episode, 3x All-Star Gilbert Arenas gives his honest opinion on the NBA referees in today’s league.

In a recent podcast episode of “Gil’s Arena” podcast, former NBA veteran Gilbert Arenas addresses the current officiating culture in the NBA. After one of the co-hosts asks Arenas whether Jokic deserved to get ejected from that game, Arenas immediately replies, “No.” Gilbert Arenas further explains how the ‘ejection’ process happens in today’s NBA games. He explains, “I know it sounds bad but they remind me of cops. You (refs) have the power, supposed to have the discipline, supposed to have all the training that you got through, and the responsibility on us (refs) to behave in a manner.

He further adds, “Someone should ask Adam Silver this: ‘If I’m a player, I’m playing a game that’s emotional. I’m acting in real-time, with real human emotions. And when I don’t control my emotions, a ref can give me a technical. Which means, whatever I said to him irritated him so bad that he (ref) didn’t control his emotions and gave me a tech.

Gilbert Arenas reveals the double standards of the NBA referees today. Arenas explains that referees have no win-or-lose situation in any NBA game they officiate. So, they should be completely professional and not base their decisions on emotions like the players. But did Nikola Jokic cross the line with the NBA refs during the Nuggets vs Pistons game?

The Denver Nuggets are the defending NBA champions who got off to an incredible 8-1 run in their new NBA season. However, the Nuggets have been on a two-game losing streak when facing off against the Detroit Pistons. The Nuggets were fired up to get back on their winning streak. The Detroit Pistons, who were on an 11-game losing streak before this game, were determined to start winning games as well. With emotions running high for both teams from the beginning, Nuggets coach Michael Malone was already unhappy about the calls that the NBA refs were giving in favor of the Pistons. Malone aggressively argued against the referees and was eventually ejected from the game after getting two technical fouls.

Nikola Jokic was infuriated with the NBA refs giving him no calls during the game. He had not attempted a free throw in 15 minutes of play despite getting clearly fouled in some plays. After he complained to the officials, he was immediately thrown out of the game as well.
