Detroit lost their precious basketball gem this month. 2x NBA champion and a pivotal figure for the Detroit Pistons, Earl Cureton, passed away at the age of 66 on February 4th, 2024. It seemed like the entire city gathered in the hall of St. Cecilia’s Church in Detroit to pay tribute to the life and legacy of the late NBA legend. Attendees included basketball luminaries such as Isiah Thomas, Jalen Rose, Rick Mahorn, and more, all mourning the unexpected loss.

Numerous came together to honor Cureton’s impact and contributions to the sport and especially the city. Former NBA star Derrick Coleman who was present at the church shared a photo on his Instagram and wrote, “It Was Standing Room Only As We Payed Our Respects To Our Brother Earl Cureton.”

While the cause of death is unknown, it has visibly left the people shaken. 

Earl Cureton’ unforgettable impact

“God calls you home when God is ready. Not when I’m ready, not when you’re ready, not when Earl was ready,”  Late Detroit Pistons owner Bill Davidson’s son, Ethan Davidson said. Along with his legendary game and unwavering work ethic, he was also known for his contributions to the community. His dedication and notable efforts for St. Cecilia have etched his name in people’s hearts. As an extension of his efforts, Cureton’s family urged the visitors at his funeral to donate to Ceciliaville Gym. To pay homage to his dedication, work for the city as well as impactful tenure with the Pistons, the Detroit Police Specialist Reserves announced the retirement of Cureton’s jersey number 23.

He made major contributions to his college team in Detroit in securing a spot in the 1979 NCAA tournament. Following this, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors, until his retirement in 1997. Nicknamed the “Twirl,” he also played for the Charlotte Hornets and Pistons and won NBA titles in 1983 and 1994. He has played alongside numerous basketball luminaries such as Michael Jordan, and Julius  Erving. Muggsy Bogues, another close friend of the late basketball star was also present at the ceremony. Through the speeches, his memory will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew him.
