Who’s the GOAT? This evergreen question is always part of fervent debates across the basketball world. But these days the hunt has landed over two legends: Isiah Thomas and Stephen Curry. Undoubtedly both of them are considered the best players despite their slight builds. While Isiah, aka Zeke, was the pivotal reason for Detroit Pistons’ back-to-back championship wins from 1989 to 1990, Steph is arguably the best shooter in NBA history, also owning 4 rings.
After recognizing the greatness among the two, Daniel O’Brien was immediately urged to share it with the basketball world. He then took it to his official X account and penned, “By my count, in the past 40 years, there have only been 2 NBA champions who are 6’3 & under to be the indisputable best players on their team: Isiah Thomas in 1989 & 1990, Steph Curry in 2015 & 2022.”
And, as expected, the tweet started making waves all across the internet, thus, garnering the attention of the NBA world and Isiah Thomas. “Let it be known only one led his team to back2back championships as the team-leading scorer and the team leader in assists,” penned Isiah Thomas in response to the comparison.

This acted as fuel, and once again the basketball world was drawing comparisons between Thomas and Curry. One of the fans, while pointing at Isiah Thomas, penned, “You ain’t better than Steph, keep it pushin’.” Guess what? This triggered Isiah Thomas.
I never said I was, that’s your interpretation and opinion. I stated a hardcore fact of being the only small PG to win back2back while leading in scoring and assist @NBAHistory we both won, and won differently in our era. You can push that! https://t.co/aCzkOqWVt9

You can push that!” firing back at the fan. But what’s the difference between the two?
Isiah Thomas vs. Stephen Curry
Back in 1989-90, Thomas played 80 games but averaged 18.2 PPG, proving himself as the team’s best passer. Not only this, but he also helped the team to secure its first franchise championships with an average of 21.3 points, 1.5 steals, and 2.5 rebounds per game. Interestingly, he stood atop the following season with 18.4 Points Per Game and 9.4 assists per game.

And, this helped Thomas to win his MVP title. Meanwhile, Steph Curry averaged more than Thomas, 23.8 PPG and 7.7 APG during his 2014-15 season. In addition to this, he averaged 26.0 PPG and 6.3 APG as a part of Golden State, also leading the team to accomplish a 4-2 win over the opponent team’s Cleveland Cavaliers having LeBron James.
Despite all, Thomas believes Curry isn’t the best PG on the Warriors. “On the Golden State Warriors, you are the point guard,” he had said to Draymond Green. However, according to him, the 6’2 Warriors star is “one of the greatest shooters ever.” Curry averages career points at 24.8 as compared to Thomas’ 19.2. It reverses as the 2X champion leads 9.3 to 6.4 in assists. While the status may remain up for debate, as Thomas mentioned, the two stood to distinguish themselves in their era each. Who do you think takes the win?
