The stats from Bronny James so far during the summer league look something like- 15 PTS, 6-26 FG, 0-12 3P. This has led many to believe that it’s not the right performance of the 55th pick from the Los Angeles Lakers for his future. However, in a contrasting opinion, Gilbert Arenas highlighted a mentality that many might have overlooked.

Recently, DJ Vlad asked Gilbert Arenas how he viewed the upcoming year for Bronny James. He even said to ‘Agent Zero’ that the expectations from a 55th pick are unrealistic. Arenas explained that the issue was not Bronny being drafted at #55 but it is a larger issue with fathers in general. “More mad that this father did something for a son that you didn’t do for yours,Arenas said, via VLADTV.

He continued, “So it’s more your insecurity as a father than it is LeBron James.” Further expounding on his reasons, Arenas said that there are fathers who have passed on their businesses, and their teams to their kids, and no one said anything. But when LeBron James used his leverage to get his son on the team, it was a problem. Hence, he called such a mentality an insecurity.

According to Gilbert Arenas, the point of fatherhood is to pass the knowledge, and resources on to the next generation. Plus, he feels that the other teams were interested in Bronny James, but agent Rich Paul denied that possibility. So the team’s interest in the Lakers forward proves that it was no handout. And it was not the first time when Arenas had defended the 19-year-old.

Gilbert Arenas compares Bronny’s performance with the 2023 #1 draft pick

Arenas a few days ago on his Gil’s Arena podcast said Bronny is facing the pressure of a no. 1 pick, despite being 55. For a 55th pick, a 4-point game is not a big deal, since many don’t even get to play the games during the regular season. Reminding people of Victor Wembanyama‘s first summer league game where he scored just five points.

Although Gilbert Arenas never meant to compare the two skill sets of different players. He just highlighted how summer leagues don’t necessarily provide the right assessment of players. Even Arenas’ assessment of the Wemby’s game was wrong as the ROTY scored 9 points in the game, alongside 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks.

So Gilbert Arenas is happy that the best situation for LeBron is that he could directly teach him the ropes of the NBA. Instead of another franchise or any other players, LeBron could teach the professionalism and leadership skills required to sustain in the league. And then eventually Bronny would create his own path.
