NBA athletes do a lot of good for the community. While it is not necessarily done with the intention of getting more eyeballs, it is always better to be recognized for the good work. Recently, Jamal Crawford’s annual toy giveaway was applauded by Fox13 Seattle when they covered his recent event on the channel.

Crawford was touched by the recognition as well. Resharing the clip on his Instagram, he responded with folded hands. Since he has been doing it for so long, on several occasions, some of his teammates have also joined him in executing this plan. Crawford is a firm believer in not doing anything while expecting something in return. In an interview with the Seattle Times in 2016, he said, “I always say in my tweets, don’t do something for credit. Do it because it’s the right thing to do. I’m honored to get those awards, but the stuff that people don’t know about is what moves me more than anything else”.

The NBA veteran said that he has been like this since he was a kid and didn’t have much to give back. He said, “I can remember doing when I was 13 and 14. I had $5 and I would give away a couple of dollars to somebody that needed it more.” He detailed the reasoning behind his generosity by saying, “you hear stories like it’s important to give back because it makes me feel good. Or it’s important to give back because it’s a blessing to be able to bless others.”

Apart from his annual toy giveaway, Crawford does a lot more for the community in different ways. Although he doesn’t like to brag about it, his contributions are often highlighted by other people. He once donated $100k for the renovation of the Rainier Beach gym. His jersey is framed at the gym and the basketball court is named after him.
