Michael Jordan has been the benchmark for comparison for decades now. Many in the NBA wouldn’t dare to put a player in the same conversation as the Chicago Bulls legend unless they are the best in business. However, there is a Philadelphia 76ers legend who has not hesitated to put himself above Jordan. Well, that’s a rare scenario but he has been saying this for quite some time now. This time joining Shaquille O’Neal on his podcast, let’s see what Julius Erving has to say about being better than the 6-time champion. 

When it comes to the GOAT debate, it has been only a few players like MJ, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Shaq, etc. It is harder to term someone as the GOAT if they do not have a ring. However, Erving has three championships along with four MVPs. But most importantly, he believes he was entertaining to watch. Despite that, we never hear him in the GOAT conversation. Erving shared, “We preceded the era of basketball in really, really big money, really, really big hype, the things associated with the international game…I was like one of the first to go over China, go over England.”

This has been a huge concern for Erving. However, he still hopes that he can make it to the GOAT debate. The 1993 Hall of Famer shared, “I think that in time, you know justice will be done, but I can’t lose no sleep over something I didn’t have”. Anyhow, back in his era, many felt he was better than MJ, including him. Sadly, we don’t hear about this take anymore. MJ’s impeccable resume has probably blinded it. 

Shaquille O’Neal gives Julius Erving a huge assurance

The era of basketball before Michael Jordan is not seen by the fans of modern basketball in the same light. It has been the players during and after MJ’s era who take the limelight. Shaq has been a big fanboy of Dr. J. After the Sixers legend shared his concern, Shaq couldn’t help but feel sad for his idol.

The LA champion said, “Yeah but that upsets me because you paved the way…Imma just let you know I’m always gonna keep your name alive,”. Shaq also added that there would be no Magic, or MJ, or Kobe Bryant, or LeBron James, if not for Dr. J. Big Diesel made sure he gave the credit when it was due. Well, this is what basketball is all about.
