Perkins did not waste any time in exposing the weaknesses of the Lakers. He pointed out in particular D’Angelo Russell’s patchy play against the Nuggets. Even with excellent performances from players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers struggled in Game 1 to control Nuggets center Nikola Jokic. Perkins underlined Russell’s pressing need to improve. He highlighted his game to support the team’s star combo and the Lakers’ chance on the rim. Perkins mentioned, “They have the best starting five in basketball they have the best player in basketball you know what scrambled eggs look like yep they look like the Lakers cuz they got Jokić tonight.” His frank assessment highlighted how vulnerable the Lakers are in their attempt to prevent a recurrence of their recent setbacks against the Nuggets.
The 39-year-old, Perkins stated, “They had to improve on the perimeter some thought that they needed a third star Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell has to step up to the plate especially when you’re going against the defending champs”. He continued, “I look at D’Angelo Russell yes has he been ball in the second part of the season, and played in a tournament he has but against the Denver Nuggets for some reason, he doesn’t show up and when you get a night when Anthony Davis has 32 and 14 LeBron James has 27 all you need is a little bit of help from your two guys in Russell and Austin Reaves if they don’t come to the table and perform form at Elite level the Lakers are going to get swept.” However, Russell of the LA Lakers has come under fire from Perkins for not being more dependable earlier too.
