J.J. McCarthy is inspired by the Kobe Bryant 

J. J. McCarthy is one of the best quarterbacks in college football. He tops the nation in QBR with an impressive 93.7, ranks second in passer rating at 199.1, and is also second in completion percentage with 78.1.

McCarthy’s style of play evokes the same fierce determination that Bryant embodied. When discussing his source of inspiration, McCarthy highlighted the similarity between the late Lakers legend’s game and the readiness of an ancient Italian gladiator preparing for a battle.

Talking about his inspiration, McCarthy’s said “That comes from just studying the greats. One of the greats that I study was Kobe,”  He elaborated, “And when he would step on the court, he said it was like gladiator picking up the dirt and smelling it. I try to switch my mindset into that similar of his. When I step in between those white lines, it’s war, like the warrior is coming out.”

J.J. McCarthy is influenced by Heisman winner Joe Burrow

Aspiring to emulate the success of the 2019 Heisman winner, McCarthy has undoubtedly found a reliable approach to achieving excellence in his college football career. When questioned about the quarterback he looks up to, McCarthy earnestly expressed his deep admiration for Burrow, stating, “Midwest guy.” He added, “I love the way that he approaches the game and how his mental preparation is his biggest asset and his biggest competitive edge.”
