Metta Sandiford-Artest once again left his social media followers scratching their heads. He’s surely a passenger on the Wemby hype-train. But while doubling down on one of his most otherworldly predictions, he’s made an unrelated and odd comparison. The Lakers star believes Victor Wembanyama will have a 100+ point game sometime in his NBA career. He reiterated that by bringing Wilt Chamberlain into the discussion.

Wemby will average 40+ in a season while scoring 101 pts…Wilt would’ve have one season averaging 60 in this era. He was Greek Freek 1.5… Greak Freak is HOF even in the 90’s,” Sandiford-Artest wrote on X and caused many to ask under it what he meant.

It’s not uncommon for the erstwhile Metta World Peace to stun with words as much as he did with his aggression on the court. This NBA season, he’s been watching Wemby and he’s said more than once the rookie is going to surpass every superstar on the court. But how does that connect Wilt, whose middle name should be ‘Legend,’ to the Greek Freak, Giannis Antetokounmpo? Only Metta knows.

Only one legend has made 100 points in a game and that’s Wilt Chamberlain in a 1962 game. To put it in perspective, Wilt the Stilt averaged 36.9 points per game in his prime. Going by Artest’s claims, the late Goliath would’ve averaged 60 in the current NBA era.

Antetokounmpo’s best stat in his career was in 2022-23 season with 31.1 Ppg. So far into the 2023-24 season, he’s at 30.6 Ppg. In comparison, Victor Wembanyama is on a decent roll in his first NBA season averaging 21.8 points.

The last line is another riddle because Giannis was not playing in the ’90s nor was “Greek Freek 1.5″ Wilt. Several others under this tweet asked what he meant by this Wemby-Wilt-Giannis trifecta. One thing’s clear, he has high hopes for Victor Wembanyama.

Metta Sandiford-Artest’s future plans for Wemby

Wembanyama is only in his first NBA season but Sandiford-Artest has already made a checklist for him to get through in his fledgling career. Earlier, he said that Wemby could steal the MVP title this season – a race with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid in the running. He said Wemby will get Most Improved Player too but that’s unlikely since it’s decided based on the past season’s performance.

Besides that, he’s already predicted that Wemby will surpass Wilt with a 101-point game in his career. He’s made the point several times before on X and on an appearance on Spectrum Sportsnet. Fans though aren’t sure if he’s really got high expectations from the 19-year-old phenom or if he’s taunting the hype surrounding him.

One take at a time

I was 7 when I saw 'Space Jam' but didn't know till the third rewatch the lead actor is actually a living basketball legend. It was while studying journalism that my friend would go on about the Warriors from Golden State. Keen on athletes' personas outside their arenas, it was Stephen Curry's confidence and philanthropy that drew me to follow the news on NBA pros and explore sports media.
