“The absolute worst call of the season,” said Detroit Pistons head coach, Monty Williams about their latest game. After the Pistons’ upsetting 113-111 loss to the New York Knicks, the head coach could no longer deal with the issue with kind words. The coach berated the officials for missing a critical foul on a Knicks player that could have changed the entire course of the game. It’s not just fans, but even the coach is disheartened by the loss because of poor officiating. 

7x NBA champ Robert Horry also seemed to agree with the coach. Sympathizing with the coach, Horry in his podcast ” Big Shot Bob” shared his opinion. He shared, “That’s the first time I felt bad for a coach and an organization because that was just clearly two bad calls down the stretch.”

This one missed critical foul could have helped the Pistons clinch a victory against the Knicks. It was during the final possession of the game when Pistons rookie player Ausar Thompson was fouled by Donte DiVincenzo. Following that, Williams was also seen arguing with the officials for not awarding Thompson with a loose ball foul. Much later, the crew chief admitted that the referees had missed the foul by DiVincenzo. Before that, Williams was seen verbally bashing the officials for the unfair officiating.

Head Coach Monty Williams is upset with officiating

This is not the first time as described by the head coach. Numerous fans have voiced their discontent with poor officiating and this time, Williams ensured that his message reaches people. After treading so close to victory and then losing it to one of the best teams in the league by just two points, Williams was quite vocal about the team’s frustration during the post-game press conference. “We’re sick of hearing the same stuff over and over again. We just want a fair game called. Period. And I’ve got nothing else to say.” Furthermore, he explained, “We want a fair game and that was not fair. I’m done,” Williams shared. 

He emphasized the need for fairness in the game. Gaining people’s attention and sympathy, he demanded a more uniform and better implementation of rules, particularly during critical moments in the game. As seen earlier, this was quite a critical moment, and apologies couldn’t correct it. There is also talk about how the coach could get fined for his harsh words.
