However, Shaunie later admitted to Pastor Keion that she no longer enforced such restrictions, having learned that carrying past fears into a new relationship can be unhealthy. Yet, she emphasized that those boundaries, especially against cheating, remain important lines that shouldn’t be crossed.

This emotional scar runs deep. In her book Undefeated, Shaunie revealed that her father had also cheated on her mother. While her mother chose to stay, Shaunie decided to break the pattern by divorcing O’Neal.

Shaunie Henderson’s controversial comment

Shaunie’s book sparked a massive controversy upon its release. While the world criticized her, her children and Shaquille O’Neal stood firmly by her side. In her book, Shaunie opened up about the struggles she faced in deciding to divorce. It took considerable time and reflection for her to come to terms with ending her seven-year marriage. “Finally, feeling like my back was against the wall, with no other options in sight, I suggested that Shaquille and I separate,” Shaunie wrote. She realized it was too difficult to reconcile and repair their relationship.

Meanwhile, O’Neal’s response to Shaunie announcing her decision to divorce wasn’t what she had expected. “To my surprise, he didn’t seem that upset. He told me he didn’t think he was cut out for married life. The responsibilities were just too overwhelming,” she wrote.
