The ‘Second Decision’ will feed comedians until LeBron James retires. Because it’s that easy, just ask Gary Owen. He’s made a living roasting athletes, but Bron could stake a claim on a percentage of his income with how much he features in his content. Iman Shumpert was James’ teammate long enough to vouch for King James’ effortless ability to be comedic fodder.

Owen caught up with the former Cavs star on his poker-themed show, All In. The comedian and the NBA player have one thing in common – they both had LeBron James help their careers—Shump with that 2016 chip and Owen with a lifetime supply of material.

Anyone on the NBA’s payroll has been a part of Owen’s standup, but he’d get back to James because “LeBron’s always pretty easy. LeBron’s always an easy guy to roast.”

Now this was seemingly recorded before the entire Hennessy ad fiasco. So they’re not directly referencing James’ bluff (a little poker pun intended). It’s almost a prediction that he will be roasted, and James might have expected it with how often that happens. Owen also said he’d been picking on James through his standup since the 2003 draft pick was in high school.

There’s so much information,” he had to clarify because Shump nearly misunderstood his statement. We’re yet to hear Owen’s spin on the Hennessy debacle. But he’s loved using Bron in his material since his high-school.

Gary Owen could recall his first joke on LeBron James. “I remember the first joke I wrote on LeBron is when he was in high school, and he showed up in the Hummer like his senior year.” Don’t we all remember that chaos!

The origin of LeBron James’ comedy adjacent career

LeBron James’ mom gifted him a customized Hummer when he was still in high school through a loan against his future NBA earnings. The backlash was swift and comedians hit the lottery.

What’s your perspective on:

LeBron's 'Second Decision'—a genius marketing move or just another punchline for comedians?

Have an interesting take?

“Everybody was acting like, ‘Um, what? You got a Hummer?’ I said, ‘Okay, let’s let’s fall back here.'” Owen proceeded to narrate his joke inspired by that incident.

I go, ‘He knows he’s about to sign with Nike. He just has to graduate. What’s the problem here?’ And I’m going, ‘Uh, I’m just trying to figure out what a teacher could say to him. Like, ‘LeBron, you need your work?’ Nah.’ Like, what are you going to do after high school? ‘I got some s—planned out.’ … ‘Yeah. I think I’ll be all right if I don’t turn in this Spanish test. I got a feeling, I got a feeling I’ll be good.’

It’s an old joke and yet he had Iman Shumpert wheezing. The Knicks legend even recalled how Bron’s habit to carry books around and his lofty intuition made it easy for everyone to joke about him. Neither have commented on the ‘Second Decision’ or Owen is just leaving that for the main act.

James also made everyone think he’s about to drop the R-bomb by teasing a ‘Second Decision,’ a throwback to ‘The Decision’ where he announced his move from Cleveland to Miami. People even dropped four figures on what would’ve been his ‘final’ Lakers game. All that build-up for the plot twist to be a Hennessy ad. Yeah, the SNL script writes itself.

One of the most memorable acts by Gary Owen is ‘Poppin Bottles’ where he can’t justify spending $750 on a bottle of Hennessy. So he’s not letting this one pass.
