If you want to learn how to celebrate your spouse’s success, look no further than Gabrielle Union. As the Miami Heat announced an 8-foot big statue for their franchise legend Dwyane Wade, his loved ones were front and center celebrating him. His wife shared how even after leaving the NBA, getting his number retired, entering the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and being honored with an upcoming statue outside Kaseya Center, The Flash still got it.

She reposted the Miami Heat’s reel on her Instagram stories where her husband shrugged off his Versace jacket to effortlessly score a three before leaving the court. Union, with absolutely no bias, called him a “Legend” with heart emojis. Not to be outdone was the other Wade who was there when it all started.

21-year-old Zaire threw it back to the day his dad signed with the Heat and received that famed No.3 jersey. He wrote two heartfelt lines for his dad – “love you” and “Prada you.” Born in 2002, Zaire would’ve been a year old when Wade was selected in the 2003 NBA draft. He was present in a dapper suit to match Dwyane and was carried by Team President, Pat Riley. The 3x NBA champion reciprocated by resharing Zaire’s post to his Stories. It was indeed a special night for the Wade household, which left The Flash pleasantly surprised.

On the night when the Heat were celebrating their greatest player’s induction into the Hall of Fame, Riley surprised Wade by announcing a statue to immortalize his contributions to the franchise and the city of Miami. A bronze statue will be erected outside the arena by fall 2024, making Wade the first player in franchise history to receive such an honor.

Wade spent 14 years in Miami, winning the franchise 3 titles, all the while picking up numerous individual accolades. His impact on the city is immeasurable. So much so that in 2021, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to designate a portion of Northeast 7th Street from Biscayne Blvd. to NE 2 Avenue near the Kaseya Arena as Dwyane Wade Boulevard. If his impact on the city is this big, one can only imagine what his friends and former teammates must think of him.

Dwyane Wade’s best teammates come together

Apart from his Versace fit, Dwyane Wade rocked the ‘pillar’ of Heat Culture – Udonis Haslem in a special way. He wore a special edition of the Way of Wade sneakers with UD’s initials on them. He made it known every chance he got and earned an emotional, “My Brother…” from Haslem on Instagram.

Wade and Haslem would often credit the arrival of Shaquille O’Neal to winning their first title (though they’re still waiting on some promised Rolls Royce). The 7-foot giant who’s about to be dwarfed by Wade’s statue sent his daughter, Taahirah, to represent him on this historic night. Shaq also reposted Pat Riley’s little dig at him when announcing Wade’s statue.

One take at a time

I was 7 when I saw 'Space Jam' but didn't know till the third rewatch the lead actor is actually a living basketball legend. It was while studying journalism that my friend would go on about the Warriors from Golden State. Keen on athletes' personas outside their arenas, it was Stephen Curry's confidence and philanthropy that drew me to follow the news on NBA pros and explore sports media.
