Magic Johnson was the ultimate team-first superstar, but he is an exemplary human being before anything else. Post retirement, instead of choosing to live in luxury, he directed his resources towards philanthropy. He runs an organization, The Magic Johnson Foundation, that develops programs and supports community-based organizations that address the educational, health, and social needs of ethnically diverse, urban communities. His HIV diagnosis became a platform for courage, as he broke the stigma and funded lifesaving care. He did it with the same ferocity he brought to the court. Now there’s a new collaboration on the list!

Recently, his foundation has been actively collaborating with Cigna Healthcare to fuel more selfless acts. Focusing on health equity, community engagement, and Medicare education. In one of their latest initiatives, Magic Johnson has taken up the responsibility to ensure water safety amongst children who are living with sickle cell disease. According to the American Society of Hematology, “In sickle cell disease, the hemoglobin is abnormal, causing the red blood cells to be rigid and shaped like a ‘C’ or sickle, the shape from which the disease takes its name.”

He recently made an Instagram post about this initiative, planned for May, which is National Water Safety Month. The post’s caption gave all the insights. It read: “Many kids in diverse communities don’t get the chance to learn how to swim, and that challenge is even greater for kids living with sickle cell disease, which almost exclusively affects the African American/Black community.” The cause is bigger than we understand. 1 in 13 children of African descent suffers from this disease, and overall, SCD affects about 100,000 people in the United States. He further explains why it can be life-threatening.

“Water temperature and overexertion can trigger a painful sickling crisis, which is why these kids are often advised not to swim.” If a child experiences fatigue and faints during the swimming session, it can cost the kid his/her life. This is why Magic Johnson and Cigna Healthcare are creating awareness about it. “But, with the right precautions, they can learn to swim safely.” They aim to teach safe swimming methods to all the kids out there, battling with this disease.

However, this isn’t the first time he has taken up an initiative for children. They helped the kids from local communities that were affected by the Southern California wildfires. Magic Johnson said, “I’m so happy that we were able to provide a much-needed day of fun to local Altadena and Pasadena children, as well as others in surrounding communities. It’s so important for us to come together and support these families whose lives have been changed forever.”

As fans, acts like these relieve us. When the heroes whom the public makes famous and supports use their popularity and resources for a good cause. Seeing them uplift communities and speak on real issues gives their fame deeper meaning. It turns admiration into pride, knowing our heroes are also role models off the court.

Magic Johnson’s extended philanthropy to education

Magic Johnson has long understood that his greatest assist wasn’t on the hardwood; it’s in society. His latest act of generosity? A $500,000 pledge to Xavier University of Louisiana during its Centennial Gala in May 2025. The donation, honoring Dr. Norman C. Francis’ 47-year legacy of educational leadership, underscored Johnson’s unwavering commitment to HBCUs and the next generation of Black scholars.

Xavier is the nation’s only Catholic HBCU. It holds a unique role in producing Black medical and STEM professionals, a mission that Magic Johnson passionately supports. “Education is the ultimate equalizer,” he’s often said, and this gift reinforces that belief. The gala, headlined by Jeffrey Osborne and hosted by Bill Bellamy, raised over $2 million collectively, but Johnson’s contribution stood out as both symbolic and strategic. It’s not just charity; it’s an investment in systemic change.

This isn’t Johnson’s first rodeo. From funding STEM programs to partnering with HBCUs for entrepreneurship initiatives, he has consistently leveraged his platform to democratize opportunity. His philanthropy mirrors his playmaking: visionary, purposeful, and always elevating others. While the world knows him for no-look passes, his real magic lies in seeing potential where others overlook it and putting resources behind that vision.

As Xavier’s president, Dr. Reynold Verret, noted, these funds remove barriers for students who’ll shape tomorrow’s America. For Johnson, that’s the only stat that matters. Because true legends don’t just make history, but they fund its next chapters.
