It was a good night for Lakers fans at the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday. After a rough patch, the team bounced back with a solid 107-98 win against the Portland Trail Blazers. However, their biggest star, LeBron James, was courtside due to injury. But he wasn’t the only big LA star there. LA Dodgers icon Shohei Ohtani was also there with his wife, Mamiko Tanaka. Happy at the sight was Lakers legend and Dodgers co-owner, Magic Johnson.

Shohei Ohtani’s rare public appearance had fans buzzing, especially considering he’s been laying low since the Dodgers’ World Series triumph and his unforgettable MVP announcement with dog Decoy. Lakers were quick to share the moment on their social media and so was Magic Johnson. “Nice to see the World Series Champion and NL MVP Shohei Ohtani with his wife at the Lakers game tonight!” he wrote

Since Ohtani and Tanaka announced their marriage in February, they’ve kept a low profile, adding an air of mystery to their relationship. They only made their first official public appearance in May this year at the Dodgers Foundation’s 2024 Blue Diamond Gala, and then again at the MLB All-Star game in July. Their sightings have thus been rare, understandable of the attention at the Lakers’ game. But apart from this, basketball has a special place in their story—Tanaka herself is a former pro player from Japan.

She played for the Fujitsu Red Wave in the Women’s Japan Basketball League from 2019 to 2023, where she averaged 24 minutes, 7.8 points, and 6.0 rebounds per game in her last season. As she revisited the game from afar, cameras captured the duo, smiling and laughing, clearly enjoying their night. To top it all off, the Lakers gifted Ohtani and Tanaka custom jerseys. It must have been a sight for Magic Johnson, watching two of his teams in the same space.

Magic Johnson is a happy man right now

Magic Johnson might be the happiest person right now. Why? Recently, his Dodgers won the awaited title, bringing his total count, as a player and an owner, to 15. Not only that, he played a key role in bringing Shohei Ohtani to Los Angeles. And Ohtani? He’s already delivered on everything Johnson hoped for, making an immediate impact and living up to the hype.

He became the first MLB player ever to join the elite 50/50 club, smashing 50 home runs and stealing 50 bases in a single campaign. Even with his pitching on pause last year because of UCL surgery, his career ERA of 3.01 speaks volumes. Oh, and let’s not forget—he’s now an MLB MVP too.

And now with the Lakers back in winning ways, it is going all Johnson’s way. Anthony Davis led the charge with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots, while D’Angelo Russell notched a season-high 28 points and 14 assists. Rui Hachimura chipped in 23 points and four steals, helping snap the team’s three-game skid.
