The 2023-24 season wasn’t the best for the Golden State Warriors. With Draymond Green’s suspension, the team struggled after a decade of dominance. While Steve Kerr is undoubtedly the backbone of the team, the foundation for such an incredible roster was initially laid by Mark Jackson, who surprisingly doesn’t have many coaching opportunities available. Former NBA player Richard Jefferson believes that young talents are missing out on true basketball knowledge because Jackson isn’t being hired by any franchise.

On The Mark Jackson Show, Jefferson acknowledged the work Jackson put into building the Warriors’ roster in just three years. Speaking from his experience, he praised Jackson’s work ethic and efforts to boost player morale. After not making it to the postseason in 5 years, Jackson led the young Warriors to a Conference Semi-Finals appearance in 2013. And then again in 2014. However, just a few days after the Warriors’ elimination, Jackson was fired. Since then, he hasn’t been able to secure another coaching job.

“There’s not many coaches out there that I ever had an experience that did what you did. And so to see that, that you haven’t had another job, you know, that to me is a disservice to the game of basketball because there’s too many young players that would benefit from having you there,” Jefferson said on the podcast.

Nevertheless, Jackson’s contribution to the franchise remains instrumental. Leading a team brimming with young talent to a Western Conference semi-final appearance and achieving a 50-win season after decades was no small feat. This team went on to become the biggest dynasty of modern times.

Jefferson understands this and believes that other teams are missing out on the opportunity to hire such a basketball mastermind. Perhaps the complexity surrounding his firing may or may not have played a role in this.

Why was Mark Jackson fired just after three years?

He was achieving a level of success with the franchise that hadn’t been seen in decades. Even in his rookie coaching year with the Warriors, the player-turned-coach showed immense talent. So why was he fired? He was accused of imposing his religious beliefs on the players.

Even more surprisingly, Jackson was reportedly disliked by his colleagues. It was said that his beliefs also conflicted with the front office, assistant coaches, and likely many others in the organization.

The team’s star player, Stephen Curry, and former NBA player Andre Iguodala, however, have always offered high praise for their coach. Former TV analyst Jim Barnett revealed that it was difficult for Jackson to work in an environment where so many people didn’t align with his views.

While Jackson claims that the Golden State Warriors‘ narrative has marred his chances for a second opportunity in coaching, the answer isn’t as simple as that.
