The Point God made history once more and floored more than a few generations of NBA stars. When the Spurs hosted the Pelicans last night, Chris Paul made a simple pass to Victor Wembanyama in the first half. With his young teammate getting that 3-pointer, CP3 picked up the 12,092nd assist of his 20-year career. Before the game was at the halfway point, Paul became the second all-time NBA assists leader, trailing only John Stockton.

The former second-place, Jason Kidd, was too occupied with his Mavericks beating the Raptors to react. But others had to hype him. Matt Barnes hailed his former Clippers teammate’s productivity at this stage of his career by sharing an infographic of CP3’s milestone on his Instagram Stories. “Salute to the longevity and greatness @cp3,” Barnes wrote.

The Spurs won 121-116 before the home crowd on Sunday and his former teammates weren’t going to be left out. In 31 minutes, 39-year-old Paul had 6 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds while playing for his seventh team. Andre Iguodala shared a post celebrating the achievement with Paul in each of his jerseys.

Spurs legend Manu Ginóbili outdid them, though. It appears he was at Frost Bank Center to watch his team make a 12-12 record and witnessed CP3’s record firsthand. When the arena displayed the record on the Jumbotron, Ginóbili captured the moment to share on X writing, “Amazing! 2nd All-Time in assists! Congrats @CP3! That’s a lot of them!

Chris Paul’s moment created quite the emotional locker room after the game because it didn’t come easy.

Chris Paul proves doubters wrong

He failed to collect an early assist in the first quarter. He’d take 3 assists early in the second quarter to reach the goal. Since coming to the Spurs, some have had doubts about Paul enabling the Spurs’ growth at this point of his career. Days before he hit this milestone, Carmelo Anthony challenged those doubters stating, “There’s no guard in the history of the game who’s done what CP is doing.” The sentiment even made Chris’ wife, Jada Paul, grateful.

Jason Kidd hasn’t said anything yet but Paul claimed he didn’t dream of surpassing him. “I mean, five years ago I had seen that number and it’s like, ‘Man, you going to play long enough to do that?’ Seriously. I mean, I remember being a rookie, I said that before, looking up in Utah, seeing John Stockton all-time steals and assist leader. So, yeah, it is kind of crazy. I mean, I’m grateful for the opportunity to still continue to play,” he said before the game.

Paul’s led the league in assists five times and averaged double-digit assists in seven seasons. He’d need about 3,000 dimes to surpass John Stockton’s 15,806 record to become the all-time leader. But he’s proven the Point God can’t be discounted yet.
