Back in 2018, ‘Verified Athletic’ conducted a survey among college football coaches. Would they recruit student-athletes with a low GPA? 85% of the coaches said they were less likely to do so, and that points towards one conclusion: Your GPA will determine the financial package you receive. But that’s college football! Yes, but the same philosophy spills over to basketball as well, and there is no one better than Matt Barnes’ sons who understand this. So when stellar stats collide with a single ‘F’ in the classroom, expect to Barnes twins not to be a part of this!

The brothers received an offer from the University of San Diego last month and happily shared the news online. “Blessed to have received a D1 offer from the University of San Diego. Thank you to coach Lavin and the staff for believing in me,” their statement mentioned. Of course, mom Gloria Govan was elated and mentioned on her own Instagram stories: “BOYS GOT THEIR 1ST D1 OFFER.” The twins are clearly putting in the work. Both the lads have starred for the Celts over the past two seasons. For instance, Carter has appeared in 61 games—two more than Isaiah.

In his freshman season, Carter put up 7.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. This season? A strong 11.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game across 30 outings. And Isaiah has been equally solid. This season, he played 28 games and recorded 13.3 points, grabbing 6.3 boards, dishing out 2.8 assists, and snagging 2.0 steals a night. They’re showing growth, skill, and heart. But one of those will matter if they can’t keep their grades up. That’s not a rumor, that’s straight from their mom.

“She says no grades, no sports. So grades come first,” the twins (specifically Isaiah) shared on the Sportsing! podcast earlier this week. Mom Gloria Govan, who was also on the podcast with them, added, “Yes, student-athlete, right? We talk about it being the student part first.” So what is their favorite subject? For Carter, it is Bible and Theology, and for Isaiah, it is just Theology, though with a wink, the latter added, “If any of my other teachers watch this, I’m lying.”

Even at school, they’ve earned a rep. Mom Gloria Govan further added, “These two boys. Me and Derek [Fisher] laugh all the time. They just stay like legit. They kind of lightweight run the place a little bit.” But why do they like Theology? Well, Isaiah explained, “It’s just a cool class to be in, you know?”

You get to learn about Jesus and things. […]  I so like my teacher. Classmates? Meh. Teacher? Yes!” Isaiah explained, but Momma had way more context. So she added, “They go to an all-boys school.”

From their conversation further, it looked like the boys were all locked in on the sport and are looking forward to making it in basketball. However, they also did something that made their mother happy recently.

Matt Barnes’ twins’ Mother’s Day tribute!

So while most of the world was busy showering their moms with love this Mother’s Day, Isaiah and Carter Barnes made sure theirs felt the same. The Crespi High hoopers and sons of former Warriors vet Matt Barnes didn’t hold back, sharing some heartfelt moments with their mom, Gloria Govan, on Instagram—and the love was real.

To kick things off, Isaiah took to his story and kept it simple but sweet: “Happy mother’s day mom, I love you so much @glogovan,” he wrote. Alongside that, he shared three photos that really told the story. The first snap? A fresh click from prom night, with Isaiah and Gloria posing together in the backyard just before he headed out.

Then came a picture of Isaiah kissing Gloria on the forehead, with her smiling softly at the camera. And to top it off, a throwback that took us all the way back to the early days: baby Isaiah and Carter, cradled in Gloria’s arms, her joy practically glowing through the lens.

Meanwhile, Carter went the more minimal route, reposting a message from the “Trust God Bro” page that read, “God, thank you for my mom.” It may have been short, but it’s from the heart. Even though Gloria and Matt Barnes have gone their separate ways, one thing hasn’t changed—Gloria’s impact on the Barnes twins’ journey. What do you think?
