Michael Jordan’s banned Air Jordan 1

On the same day in 1984, the NBA banned the original Air Jordan 1. Popularly known as the banned Air Jordan, MJ wore these shoes during their debut. However, he had to pay a $5,000 fine to the league each time. The reason is the colors of the shoes violated the NBA’s uniform rules. Significantly, the league even went as far as writing a letter to Nike in February 1985, explicitly stating the prohibition of black and red footwear. Rather than adhering to the league’s regulations, the brand seized the opportunity.

As per reports, Nike covered Jordan’s fines, capitalizing on the allure of the banned shoes. Do you remember those iconic shoes?

The 6 x NBA champion also wore these shoes during the 1985 Slam Dunk Contest. Almost every sneaker worn by the legend has an interesting story behind it. Nonetheless, this is one of the most fascinating of them all.
