It’s established that athletes and analysts are oil and water. Unless the analysts are also former players. So Dwight Howard and DeMarcus Cousins aren’t seeking Brian Windhorst’s validation nor is the ESPN veteran trying to be friends with them. Windhorst and DH 12 particularly have a tense history that’s bordering on feud territory. With Boogie on his show, Howard took a lot of pleasure over Cousins roasting Windhorst off the cuff. Both proved they aren’t going to make peace with the sportscaster any time soon.

Windhorst is currently following Team USA in Paris, doing his job, most recently sharing the team’s status ahead of the game against Brazil, and slamming FIBA. There was nothing recently to warrant it, but while Cousins was on Above the Rim, he dragged the ESPN analyst into a discussion.

When Boogie announced his retirement this year, NBA pros were at the forefront expressing what an honor it was to be on the court with him. When asked if his peers’ recognition mattered more over the outside chatter, Cousins didn’t stutter in his response.

I put it to you like this. If I walk into a room and LeBron James is in there – like we can arguably say one of the greatest to ever touch a basketball – and he acknowledges me, that mean way more than motherf***ing Brian Windhorst… telling me I’m great.” Ouch. Windhorst hadn’t even commented on Bron or Boogie recently to be made an example out of.

Howard found Boogie’s phrasing hilarious. He said he’d respect criticism from DeMarcus Cousins any day over Windhorst. He pretty much has lived by it too.

Dwight Howard is selective about criticism

The relationship between Dwight Howard and Brian Windhorst is different from Dwight and NBA pro-turned-analyst, Shaquille O’Neal. The two Orlando legends feud out of mutual respect and admiration. But even Shaq doesn’t accept criticism from a media vet with no playing experience.

In 2019, Windhorst gave his opinion that the Lakers would not sign Dwight Howard and would instead opt for someone “younger, more active.” We all know what happened. The Lakers signed Howard, and he and Bron went on to win the 2020 championship. And despite being booed out in the past, Howard returned for one more season with the Lakers in 2021.

To be fair, Windhorst wasn’t overly critical. He did his job. He’s never been overly critical of Cousins either. And Howard too effectively ignored him and returned to the Lakers.

Stay tuned for more such updates. And join us for the exciting second episode of the “Dual Threat Show” as our host BG12 sits down with Georgia Bulldogs star and Mountain West All-Freshman Team Selection, Asia Avinger.
