New season, new team, and a new Michael Porter Jr. During his time in Denver, one rarely heard things that would demand attention. But since his trade to the Brooklyn Nets, there have been back-to-back headline-worthy moments. MPJ’s statement, ” My vice has always come in the form of women”. His logic of using Andrew Tate clips to test women on what he expects his ideal wife to be like. Now, we have another case where he is splitting the rent with his ex-girlfriend.

Jeff Teague, on his podcast, also shared his two cents on the rent situation. At first, before watching the clip of the Nets star, Teague stated, “Y’all see Michael Porter Jr. He said his girl got to go half on rent with him. I ain’t rolling with that s—.” After watching the clip, he changed his tune. “I respect what he did…” Let’s look at the MPJ situation first.

The Brooklyn Nets forward appeared on the Tuesday, Sept. 23, episode of Respectfully The Justin Laboy Show. There, the 27-year-old explained, he chose to split rent with his ex-girlfriend because he wanted to know if the women he dates are “here for the right intention.” Porter, who already has interesting thoughts about marriage, emphasized he won’t live with a partner until marriage. The rent-splitting situation came up when his ex-girlfriend was apartment hunting. She found a place she loved, but it was out of her price range.

At the time, being in the relationship, Michael Porter Jr. committed to paying the difference for a year. “I said whatever happens in this relationship for the next year, I’m committed to paying this rent.” But a few months later, they broke up, and MPJ continues to pay the rent, but on a monthly basis. But why not pay the entire amount upfront? The Nets forward stated, “Because she needs to act right month to month. I’m just saying. So, if I’m paying the remaining months…”

Teague, on his Club 520 podcast, appreciated the efforts of staying committed to pay despite MPJ’s breakup. “And you be like, I gave you 50,000 for the year and you got…I f— with that. It really smooth though for that.” The former champion with the Bucks also stated how he would have approached the situation. “But I’d be like just stay in your budget. I just pulled up to my house…live in that ghetto and just come to my house…Yeah, I wouldn’t. You shouldn’t live outside your means, but like definitely”.

He was linked with several women, none of whom he has had a long-term relationship with. First, American actress Madison Pettis, and then Madison Prewett, who was the runner-up of season 24 of The Bachelor. Basketball Network reporter Shane Garry Acedera once said Porter Jr. is not a womanizer. Back in March 2025, MPJ was shopping for Rolex watches with influencer Kelsey Calemine.

“I got two younger brothers that are married, I got two older sisters who are married. I’m the only one that’s not married. And I feel that God kind of gives you what you’re prepared to handle.” So his recent comments about settling down also stem from this fact. “And so far in my life, like a good woman, I don’t think I’m ready to handle that because I’m all over the place. Sometimes I’m good and sometimes I’m not.”

However, the athlete has never chosen to go into detail about any of these relationships. That’s why, on Respectfully The Justin Laboy Show, MPJ stated, “It’s very hard when you have money to tell a woman’s intentions.” With the start of a new life as a professional in Brooklyn, with new expectations, Porter doesn’t want to rush into anything with his personal commitments.
