The inaugural Chicago Bulls Ring of Honor recently paid tribute to 13 former Bulls. Hall of Fame hoopers like Michael Jordan were among the honorees. Also inducted, was the late Jerry Krause, a key architect behind the team’s success. However, a sudden unexpected gesture by Bulls fans ruined his honor at the event.  What happened at the Bulls’ inaugural Ring of Honor ceremony? And how are people connecting Michael Jordan‘s ‘The Last Dance’ to the events of that night? Well, last night was the Bulls’ first ever Ring of Honor ceremony. Since Jerry Krause passed away in 2017, his widow, Thelma, showed up in his stead. Unfortunately, when her husband’s name was called, Chicago’s United Center began booing their former executive.

Now, here’s how that might be tied to ‘The Last Dance’. the docuseries focused on the friction between players and the front office, notably between Jordan and Krause. Jerry Krause’s role was painted as antagonistic, with the tension stemming from his belief that players took undue credit for the Bulls’ on-court triumphs. His quote, “Players and coaches alone don’t win championships” further fueled the argument as MJ would share his disdain for the comment.

Furthermore, the series also hinted that the Bulls dynasty was brought to an end by Jerry Krause. Despite the negative portrayal, it’s undeniable that the GM played a pivotal role in the Chicago Bulls’ historic six championships. The series shed light on Krause’s decisions and actions, often casting them in a critical perspective. Moreover, his comments on Phil Jackson were also shown in a poor light.

Chicago fans grappled with the issue of acknowledging his contributions while also scrutinizing his management style. The show might be the reason which inspired the fans to boo him at a ceremony. However, the undeniable success of the team during his tenure must be noticed. And even without success, booing a dead man has irked various legends and analysts. Of course, one can imagine it was a difficult night for Thelma Krause too.

Despite his instrumental role in assembling the legendary Bulls roster, Krause faced criticism and strained relationships during his tenure as the team’s general manager.  Krause retired from the organization back in 2003 with two ‘Executive of the Year’ awards (1988,1996). He was inducted into the Hall of Fame after he passed away in 2017.

Even then, it was Thelma Krause who stepped up and gave a heartwarming speech on her husband’s behalf. Six years later though, Thelma might have regrets about showing up to the Ring of Honor. The unexpected jeers shocked everyone present at the ceremony. 

The reaction from the crowd was quite unexpected. While fans’ dislike for Krause is well-known to the people, what surprised them was the sudden booing during his recognition. Audible boos echoed through the stadium during the halftime ceremony which appeared to have left his widow in tears. Steve Kerr, whose team was playing the Bulls later that night couldn’t believe the actions of the fanbase. 

During the Bulls vs Warriors game that followed, broadcaster Stacey King expressed disgust towards the booing fans. “It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I hurt for that lady. Whoever boo’d her in this arena should be ashamed.”
