“It’s official: We’re raising @mrvincecarter15’s jersey to the rafters next season. And we invited a pair of Nets legends to assist with the announcement,” penned the Brooklyn Nets’ official team. Alongside the message, they also unveiled a nostalgic video featuring his 3-pointer win against the Toronto Raptors in 2006.

Notably, Vince Carter boasts an astonishing NBA record of 22 seasons as part of Toronto, Orlando, Phoenix, Atlanta, Memphis, New Jersey, Sacramento, and Dallas. From being the 1998, North Carolina’s fifth overall pick to being voted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Carter has never failed to entertain spectators with his skills.

It’s pretty dope, man, because it’s forever up there… It’s Nets [No.] 15, Carter. Can’t use it again. Doesn’t get any better than that,” said Carter in the same video. As expected, when the video aired, it garnered the attention of the basketball world, urging them to dive into heated arguments.

Fans agitated with Carter

Amidst the buzz of Vince Carter’s jersey retirement by the Nets, Twitter erupts with mixed reactions. One of the fans penned, “Nets Desperate These Days,” dismissing the Brooklyn Nets’ announcement. Another fan added, “I wish I could hear and see more news about his cousin Penny.” Interestingly, these comments reflect strong sentiments among fans, particularly those who associate Vince Carter most strongly with his tenure as a Toronto Raptor.

Laker Goat, another commentator, remarked on the enduring impact of Carter’s tenure with the Raptors, suggesting his contributions to the team were forgettable in comparison. Jay Shakes further added a more critical tone: “Only poverty franchises retire average players’ jerseys. I don’t even remember him on the Nets lol,” dismissing the Nets’ decision to retire Carter’s jersey and suggesting that only struggling or unsuccessful franchises would choose to honor a player like Carter.

Moving on, Ibrahim Sosa’s “One playoff series win for the Nets in 10 years” attracted attention to the Nets’ lack of success in the playoffs, serving as a reminder of the team’s struggles despite the presence of their roster. Overall, the majority of comments collectively convey frustration and disappointment among fans who feel the Nets’ decision to retire No. 15 is unwarranted. Now the question is: Why are fans frustrated or disappointed with Carter’s jersey retirement?
