The Dallas Cowboys won their recent game against the Detroit Lions after the referees missed a blatantly obvious check-in by one of the eligible receivers. The sports world is up in arms after this controversial ruling that gave the Cowboys the win by taking away the points scored by the Lions to take the lead. Having seen the lineman walk up to the referee to report on TV, NBA legend Nick Young is not ready to take any excuses from the referees.

As the outcome of the game has already been decided, the former Los Angeles Lakers player is now calling for the NFL to give the Lions the match while calling out the referees in the process.

The NFL is cheating. Nah, they want them cowboys in this goddamn thing… They ain’t supposed to win; we got money on this game. All they lose money on these betting apps. The NFL is cold. That’s why I play basketball, baby, but the NFL is cold… If that wasn’t the most cheating sh*t ever – they should get the game back. They gotta get the game back. They gotta redo this like they gotta give them the points… It’s blatantly right there,” said the 2018 NBA champion.

Although Nick Young has not played in the NBA for the past four seasons, he has yet to announce his retirement from the NBA. But this hasn’t stopped him from calling out the apparent cheating scandal in the NFL. He believes that the referees are cheating, as #68 Taylor Decker walked up to the referee to check himself in. But the referee instead took #70 Dan Skipper as the reported player.

So when this happened, the Cowboys did not mark #68; instead, they marked #70. This confusion led to quarterback Jared Goff throwing it straight down to an open Taylor Decker to score the point.

Although the referees quickly called it off, the damage had been done. And now Nick Young is joining the frenzy of upset fans to call out the referees for missing the check-in made during the game. Although the Lions are locked in for the playoffs, this defeat has more to it than meets the eye.

I did not follow the traditional route to become a journalist, but my love for basketball and writing has brought me here. Seeing LeBron James? Cleveland Cavaliers make the iconic comeback from a 1-3 deficit in 2016 changed everything for a young engineering aspirant within me. Rather than simply looking at the game, I love to analyze how each player contributes to a team using BPM (Box Plus Minus) and other advanced metrics.
