Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson is arguably the greatest point guard the NBA has ever seen. His unshakable confidence with the ball and charming personality won the hearts of many basketball fans during his NBA career. However, his success off-court might be even greater than what he earned on the court. The 64-year-old Los Angeles Lakers legend recently embarked on one of the biggest business ventures of his life. The 5x NBA champion opened up about being a part of this incredible multi-billion dollar project and what it means to him.

Johnson sat down with CBS’ James Brown to discuss his acquisition of the Washington Commanders.

Magic Johnson’s emotional confession

In his interview with ‘CBS Mornings’, Brown asked Magic how emotional he got after becoming the Commanders’ first African-American owner. Brown also wanted to know how many people’s hopes were hanging on the Lakers icon.

The 64-year-old Hall of Famer replied, “When you think about being an African-American man and being in the NFL… I’ve got to thank NFL Commissioner (Roger) Goodell because he was always pushing for more of us to be involved in the ownership side of it.”

Magic further added, “But I understand that it’s not just me. It’s every black person in America, not just those who live in DC, Marilyn, and Virginia. It’s all-over. Because we’ve been ‘outside’ looking ‘in’. So, I understand how important this is for me but also for them (the African-American community) too. That’s why I got emotional.”

 

 The 5x NBA champion has never backed down from a challenge and continues to be a leading example for young kids growing up in difficult conditions.

Magic Johnson is the ideal role model

Coming from a small city in Michigan, Magic Johnson’s life has been filled with hurdles. From ‘saving the NBA’ along with Larry Bird to abruptly retiring during the prime of his career because of testing positive for HIV, the Lakers legend has seen it all.

Despite facing such difficult hurdles in life, he continues to inspire everyone around him to work hard and never settle. His infectious smile and sharp business sense have catapulted him to success even after his abrupt retirement from the NBA.

The 5x NBA champion now has a staggering net worth of $620 million. As he embarks on his biggest business venture in his life with the $5.6 billion worth Washington Commanders, one can only admire him for everything that he has achieved. He is the ideal role model for a kid who has big dreams but is afraid to work toward them because it seems impossible. Well, it is possible. All you need is a little ‘Magic’.
