He indirectly confirmed the fans are right about the issues plaguing the team. However, he’s staying silent on the outright demands from them.

Magic Johnson reflects on the Commanders’ defeat

After vanquishing the Patriots last week, the Washington Commanders didn’t get to enjoy the high for too long. The Seattle Seahawks swooped them 29-26 in the latest upset. Washington is 4-6 now, and it’s starting to outrage fans. They’re lashing out at team leadership and demanding changes there.

Magic Johnson, who’s been front and center of the ownership group since the season began, expressed his sentiments on the loss on X. And he added what caused it today too. “Heartbreaking loss to the Seattle Seahawks today. Defensively, we couldn’t come up with a big play to stop Seattle during their last two drives,” he wrote.

He does hit the nail on the head. Quarterback Sam Howell made a 19-yard touchdown to tie the game at 19. He’d again tie it to 26 with a 71-yard drive and a 35-yard touchdown. It was downhill from there as the defense gave away the points as the clock ran out.

Fans seem to agree with his analysis and went a step ahead by demanding severe changes to fix the lackluster defense. They want Johnson to fire Commanders’ head coach, Ron Rivera, and defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio. JDR has been unpopular among fans for a while now and the recent defeats are not winning him any favors.

Fans are positive about Howell’s play but are concerned the coaching staff are not giving him the necessary reinforcement. It’s very unlikely though, that Magic and his fellow owners will make a spur decision on changing the coaching team.

Magic is the positive owner with the megawatt smile. But he’s also a Lakers champion with nine more championships as a sports team owner. He has a standard he expects and he previously made it known. He blasted the Commanders for lacking “intensity” in the defeat to the Bears. But he’s also encouraging when it’s warranted.

Magic Johnson has faith in his team

It’s become a thing to wait for Magic Johnson’s response to every Commanders game on our X newsfeeds. When the Patriots fell to the Commanders, he couldn’t put all his emotions into just one post. He posted a series of tweets commending everyone who made the win possible. Howell obviously got a mention, but so did the coaches.

Johnson praised Coach Rivera as he “had the team ready to play.” He was especially pleased by the work of the offensive coordinator. Given how pleased he is with the handlers, it’s not likely one loss is going to provoke Magic into firing and hiring anyone.
