Michael Jordan is great and all. But his mother Deloris Jordan is a bigger deal. At least to Magic Johnson and Jennifer Hudson. The Los Angeles Lakers icon was on The Jennifer Hudson Show to dish his many stories about yachting and his poker buddy. Hudson also confessed that her inspiration is the Jordan Family matriarch and Magic definitely agreed.
When the EGOT legend said, “My dream is to meet his [Michael Jordan] mother,” Magic promptly responded, “Oh, first class,” to describe the persona of Deloris Jordan. Deloris is a thriving philanthropist much like Johnson. It’s no surprise he’s been in the same room as her and has seen her amazing nature up close.
“She’s just a powerful quiet presence, you know? She has that presence and powerful but also sweet, sweet, just a great person,” Magic raved about his Dream Team compatriot’s mother. He went on to refer to her multiple charitable pursuits and credited her for Michael Jordan’s philanthropy.

“She’s a blessing to others too. The foundation work and everything that Michael was able to do, she created it built it, ran it, did a wonderful job,” he further added. He’s referring to the James R. Jordan Foundation, named after MJ’s father that she founded. Deloris serves as the president of the foundation. Magic has always been fond of the Jordan family.
When His Airness came into the league, Magic was the one dominating it. As fate would have it, MJ’s historic six-championship run started when his Chicago Bulls beat Magic’s Lakers in 1991, just before the 5x champion was diagnosed with HIV. Since retirement, the two have maintained a close bond. MJ even joined Magic’s annual summer family getaway for some time last year. But Magic’s respect for Deloris is not due to her son but because of what she has done for the community.

Before Viola Davis portrayed her in Air, Deloris Jordan was as much as the “powerful quiet presence” Magic Johnson described her to be in the public eye. She co-authored several books, many of them on her son. She even gave honest accounts of Jordan’s difficult birth, his childhood, and losing her husband in a tragedy.

She’s a lot more prominent as a do-gooder now. Recently, she promoted blood donation and spread awareness about sickle-cell anemia. Cementing Magic’s “quiet” statement, Deloris did not make a public statement at the event. She instead spoke to concerned parties involved to find ways the James R. Jordan Foundation could help take this initiative further. Who do you think has the quiet powerful presence – Deloris or her son?
