Dwyane Wade closed the curtains on his NBA career in 2019 after playing 16 seasons and garnering multiple accolades to his name. The 3X NBA Champion carved out his career as one of the best shooting guards. His clinical agility made him difficult to guard, and his insane defensive skills made him a threat on both ends of the court. Playing for the NBA, Dwyane was able to use his skills to accumulate a net worth of $170 million over the years.

Having played in the league for almost two decades, Dwyane understands that to be successful, a player must understand the business aspect of the game as well. With this in mind, he gives a crucial piece of advice to the young generation on how to make the best out of their NBA career.

In a recent episode of The Why With Dwyane Wade podcast, he implores young NBA stars to take up any advice given by veterans. D-Wade says that it is important for young players in the league to learn from the vets not only about the game but especially about the business of the game. “If you get a guy’s phone number, if you got access to a guy who has done it before you, please, please, please, take them up on just information that they can give you just about the business of this game and about the game itself, how to take care of your body,” he says.

The Hall of Famer admits that he is still learning about the ins and outs of the business. Even now, he has moments of realization where he thinks about what he would have done differently if he had been aware of certain aspects in the past. “I would have had different conversations and contract negotiations,” he adds. So, his only message for the up-and-coming stars is to reach out to people who can help them understand the game and business better.

Holding on to the real ones

Dwyane Wade understands and advocates the importance of forging strong relationships inside and outside the league to succeed and have a good time in the league. He admits that it is impossible to build a deep level of relationship with every teammate, but one must hold on to those few connections that feel real. “But when you find a relationship that is real and genuine, you gotta shape it and mold it.”

The ‘Flash‘ also stresses the importance of finding people who have contacts in the business and learning from them because, at the end of the day, the game alone will not determine one’s level of success. The secret is to be able to maneuver around the business aspect of the league and have genuine people around you who can elevate you.
