Recounting Cannabis Talk With 9YO Kids, Matt Barnes Hopes to Share the ‘Experience’ as He Reveals Parenting Strategy

It’s been six years since Matt Barnes retired from basketball. Although he didn’t have to go up against world-level athletes anymore, a much bigger struggle faced him, and that was fatherhood. Barnes started playing an active role in the lives of his kids. The 43-year-old is currently preparing them for the real world.

Barnes has three children, and the identical twins are now 14 years old. As he knows that kids in this generation are moving fast and will soon be out enjoying life with their friends, Barnes recently revealed how he is always a step ahead of everything.

In a recent episode of the Point Forward podcast, the special guest was Matt Barnes. During their conversation, Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner talked to the former Warriors forward about how he was handling his children regarding smoking.

Matt Barnes explained his parenting techniques. Barnes has been smoking weed since a really young age. He started when he was just 14 years old. When Barnes retired from the NBA, his eldest kids were 9 years old.

One day they caught Barnes smoking by the pool. They thought it was just a cigarette. When asked about it, Barnes decided not to lie to them about it and told them what it was. He explained to them that, as he was an athlete for so many years, his body often hurt with all the wear and tear from over the years. So, to relieve the pain and relax his body, he is using it recreationally. Barnes has been open to his kids about it.

Barnes said, “I just want to be ahead of the game. We have had this conversation not even too long ago. And I brought it to them. Whenever you guys are ready to smoke lemme know cause I’ll smoke with you first. Cause I’ll want you to know how you are gonna feel, what is it gonna feel like, what is it gonna do to you“.

 

Barnes knows that his kids are going to be on their own soon. So he wants to prepare them for that and make them be responsible for their actions. Thus, he is giving them a taste of the real world so they will be able to handle themselves when the time comes.

Barnes is a brilliant human being and often surprises people with his knowledge. His parenting style can make some people turn their heads, but he is doing what he feels works for his family.

Similarly, as he told his kids about smoking, Barnes wanted the kids to be safe in their sexual lives as well. Barnes said that he does not want to be a grandfather yet. So he is making his kids take the necessary precautions.
