Luc Longley was an integral part of the Chicago Bulls from 1994 to 1998. He was the first Australian to feature in the NBA and played for four different teams over the course of ten seasons. He was part of the squad that won three consecutive championship titles in 1996, 1997, and 1998. When asked how was it to play alongside Jordan and get coached by Phil Jackson, he had a rather intriguing answer.
Asked to give his take on Phil Jackson being perceived as a Zen master and Michael Jordan being thought of as a God-like figure, Longley replied, “There wasn’t room for any pretenders. When I first got there, maybe I thought I was pretending a bit. Didn’t know if I was good enough, but all that stuff is real. I learned to be real in amongst all that.” Longley made it clear that he was unsure if he fit well with the team initially given the amount of talent that was around him. He learned his role and became part of the team later on.
