Stephon Marbury might be one of the most infamous retired athletes, who doesn’t get celebrated like others do. While social media throws light on famous players like Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, etc., it mostly forgets to showcase talents like Marbury to modern NBA fans. Well, Marbury is not bothered by it anymore, but he wants to be in the NBA Hall of Fame anyhow. The former Phoenix Suns icon wants to mark his name in the Naismith Memorial, following Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas’s bold claim about him on live television.
Marbury shared a huge note on Instagram, as to why he should make it to the Hall of Fame. The 47-year-old wrote, “When a Hall of Famer (Isiah Thomas) says you deserve to get in, that’s one of the highest praises. Regardless of the numbers, you need to go in. Not even talking about China. It will take about another 10-20 years for people to understand that impact. That was all GOD!” Marbury was quite emotional as he also recorded a video of him thanking the 2x champion.
Isiah Thomas shared, “Let me say this about Stephon Marbury right, and I’m speaking as a Hall of Famer. Stephon Marbury should be in the Hall of Fame. He’s impacted basketball in the United States of America…but then he goes over to China, and he’s impacted basketball in China.”

Marbury represented the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball Association, where he delivered 3 championships in four years(2011-15). He also won the CBA Finals MVP in 2015, after which he was given a statue of his own outside the Ducks arena. Marbury had an impact on basketball in both China and the USA. The only other baller to do this was Yao Ming, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in September 2016. Isiah Thomas threw light on the above comparison as well. Not just Thomas, but many other NBA players have advocated for Marbury over the years.
Kevin Durant and Rod Strickland believe Marbury should be in the Hall of Fame
Former Portland Trail Blazers star Rod Strickland talked about Marbury’s time with the New Jersey Nets. It was in the late 90s when Marbury went head-to-head against some of the best point guards in the league such as Gary Payton, Tim Hardaway, and John Stockton. Strickland said, “Steph, to me, is like one of the most dangerous guards from New York. Just physically strong, with a killer mentality. A guy you always had to worry about.”

The 3x CBA champion’s best years in the NBA was when he was with the New Jersey Nets. In his three seasons there, he averaged a minimum of 22 points and nearly 8 assists against some of the best defensive guards in the league back then. After 15 seasons in the NBA, he took his talents to China and proved his worth there as well. So, do you think Marbury might be a candidate for the 2025 Hall of Fame?
