Reggie Miller talks about battling Michael Jordan

Miller’s passion for cycling is no secret. But what’s fascinating is his perception of a connection between his basketball and cycling. It might not sound strange after you understand Miller’s explanation. He recounts the challenges in cycling, navigating through dark places to secure victory, a parallel he draws to similar struggles in basketball. Recalling the battles against Jordan, he was reminded of the effort and hard work required to overcome formidable opponents and emerge triumphant.

“On long rides or races you have to go to a dark place, you start to cramp but you navigate your way through those dark skies. Same thing in basketball, fourth quarter and Michael Jordan is kicking my a**, and I’ve got to find a way to navigate and try to do something to negate what he’s doing.

Speaking of the similarities between his basketball game and cycling, Miller said, “I think most athletes process that through your training, growing up, you find ways to mentally navigate that. Cycling is very much the same way.”

During an interview with ESPN in 1998, he admitted, “I don’t really dislike anybody in the league, but playing Reggie Miller drives me nuts.”
