We were so blinded by Luka 2.0, we almost missed the other big transformation this season. Victor Wembanyama bounced back from the season and DPOY campaign, ending blood clots with a zen retreat and training with some lethal NBA vets. And the result is showing. He ruined Cooper Flagg’s NBA debut, kept the Spurs on a winning streak this season, won Player of the Week in the West, and is pulling stunts that bring back Lob City vibes.

Reggie Miller is another NBA legend who is Wemby crazy. Only a week ago, he had a bold but not-so-unbelievable prediction for the Spurs star. This week, he’s explaining why he thinks so.

While on Dan Patrick’s show, he put Wemby in the same club as SGA and Kawhi Leonard as a great two-way player, and he was gushing about his development. “Oh, he’s changing the game. Every time you tune into a Spurs game, you’re going to see something new. So, last night it was the 360 layup, right? He will do one thing when you leave that arena or watching that game, going, ‘I got to see more.'”

The 360 layup came during the 121-103 win against the Raptors and had the home crowd screaming. The 21-year-old tallied 24 points and 15 rebounds that game. It looks like something he picked up from Clippers star Jamal Crawford. He’s also trained with Dikembe Mutombo and Kevin Garnett after his Shaolin retreat in the offseason. But that’s not all he’s done to make a complete rally for DPOY. He’s pulled a Dwight Howard by bulking up.

“He’s got great form, and I think just looking at him, it looks like he’s put on not a lot of weight, but he looks like he’s a little bit more, I don’t know, more comfortable in his skin. He put on like maybe 10 pounds or something, but he’s much more comfortable out there on the floor.”

10 pounds is understating it. The French phenom himself revealed it’s more. He was on Kevin Hart’s YouTube show, Cold as Balls, before the season began and revealed he’s put on “probably like 30 pounds” since the Spurs picked him #1 overall in 2023.

He was listed at 237 pounds on the NBA’s 2023 draft profile website, and his lanky 7’5″ frame undercut his natural talent. He’s currently in the 265-270 lbs range this season and still aerial. Wemby was also cleared in July after his medical episode that ended his previous season prematurely. So now he’s poised to prove Reggie right.

Wemby makes prophets

Now, Reggie Miller gets on the Internet’s bad side for his outlandish claims. This one though got backers. The new NBC analyst claimed that the beefed-up Wemby is going to win Defensive Player of the Year and finish top 5 in MVP voting. And if things go swimmingly, he’ll win MVP in the near future.

He tells Dan Patrick this time, “For them to be undefeated at this point—I know it’s early, it’s only a week into the season—look, they’re not winning the championship, but I like how they are playing as a young team.”

Too soon to comment if he’s almost MVP, but he might have DPOY in the bag. He’s averaging an impressive 4.8 blocks per game and 1.5 steals. Aside from that, he’s averaging 31 points, 13.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, while shooting 60.3% from the field and 36.4% from 3-point range. His height was already menacing to his opponents. He’s now got the weight to disrupt offenses. All while maintaining his signature mobility.

But Wemby is not a title contender. Miller might be right that, despite the undefeated record so far and Victor’s improvement, the Spurs are falling short of a championship squad.
