Earlier this year, Joel Embiid confidently declared, “I think I’m that talented… and to win championships you need other guys. You can’t do it by yourself.” And now, it seems the Philadelphia 76ers have answered his call. With Paul George signing a four-year, $212 million contract, and Tyrese Maxey, the NBA’s Most Improved Player, securing a hefty extension, the 76ers are gearing up for something big. But the real question is: are they ready to win a championship? A certain NBA legend thinks they just might be.

In a recent clip shared by Sirius XM Radio, NBA legend Eddie A Johnson didn’t mince words when discussing the Sixers’ upcoming season. He emphasized that Tyrese Maxey is the real key to their success. “Tyrese Maxey is an All-star guard. He is legit. He has proven that he can take over. Like not just a third guy. He can actually ascend to number one guy, any given night. That’s how good he is offensively.” Johnson said.

Before his trade, James Harden was expected to take the team to its glory. The point guard himself had believed it. But with his trade to the LA Clippers last year, out went the dreams. Or did they? Tyrese Maxey, four years on the team, proved to keep the hopes alive, taking over the point guard role excellently.

The young talent averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds, made it to his first 2024 All-Star team, and earned himself a 5-year $204 million extension.

On the other hand, the team sees experience in Paul George, two decades in. Now with a team looking to be contenders, Embiid is certainly breathing a sigh of relief — especially after hinting at playing elsewhere in fetch of a championship.  “This is Joel Embiid’s best team,” Eddie A Johnson also declared.

Joel Embiid to finally hope for championship

The 76ers may haven’t had much luck with Klay Thompson acquisition, but they aren’t looking any weak.

Last year, during an interview at the Uninterrupted Film Festival in Los Angeles, Joel Embiid brought quite the stir. While expressing his desire to win an NBA title, he also added a statement that was a rather hard pill to swallow. “I just want to win a championship. Whatever it takes. I don’t know where that’s gonna be, whether that’s in Philly or anywhere else,” Embiid stated.

The star centre has been with the franchise for a decade now, but a championship has evaded him throughout. However, after years, the 76ers finally seem committed to breaking their championship drought to an end and granting Embiid his wish in the process.

By signing George, bringing back Kyle Lowry, Kelly Oubre Jr., and adding talent like Andre Drummond and Caleb Martin, the 76ers seem like one to look out for?
